Wait and see – Port Vale manager confident of adding new striker
Port Vale FC manager John Askey says he has been encouraged after talks with a potential forward addition to his squad.
Askey has made it clear he is targeting a quality addition upfront and he has been prepared to bide his time. The Vale manager believes that this summer is a “buyer’s market” and wage demands will come down as we approach the start of the season. Askey feels that the impact of the global pandemic on club finances and the introduction of a salary cap will drive wages down.
The Valiants are in need of a fourth striker after losing Richie Bennett and Jordan Archer last season. They currently have just Mark Cullen, Tom Pope and Devante Rodney on their books – and Pope is facing a six match ban at the start of the campaign. It could leave Cullen and Rodney as the side’s only forward options at the start of the season.
There seems to be one or two who are more accessible, not too far out of our reach, where there were probably a month or two ago…
Askey told the Sentinel newspaper: “We are still waiting, I am having a chat to someone, we will just have to wait and see.
“Now we are getting closer to the season, there seems to be one or two who are more accessible, not too far out of our reach, where there were probably a month or two ago.”
