Port Vale manager confirms talks with striker Nicky Maynard

As widely speculated, Port Vale FC manager John Askey has confirmed he has had talks with free agent forward Nicky Maynard.

Experienced forward Maynard was a free agent after being released by nearby Mansfield Town in the summer. The 33 year-old, who lives locally, has scored 34 goals in 66 appearances in the last two seasons.

According to Askey, Maynard is one of several players he is looking to potentially sign. He told the Sentinel newspaper: “We have had a chat to Nicky. He is still available. He has other clubs after him. I think ideally he wants to stay local but his record, especially in the last few years, has been very good, at Bury and Mansfield. “When someone is available like that, you have to be interested.”

However, Vale are likely to face competition for Maynard’s signature from other League Two clubs. Rivals Bradford City are also rumoured to be interested in the striker while other clubs could also be interested.

However, the Valiants are keen to add a fourth forward to their squad. Mark Cullen has had some serious injuries during his career while veteran Tom Pope faces a six match suspension which means that the side could be left with just the inexperienced Devante Rodney as their only central forward option when the season begins. If Maynard’s wages fits into the side’ budget he could be an experienced option and boost the club’s hopes of pushing into the promotion picture in the 2020-21 season.

Maynard began his footballing career at Crewe Alexandra. He has had spells at Bristol City, Cardiff City as well as top-flight club West Ham United.
