Ripley 5 distribution decent, soft goals
Yak 5 not the player he was before injury
Lowe 4 too slow for me at centre half
Debrah 6 nice touches and link up at times
Grant 6 much better second half
Massey 5 ok at times
Devine 6 I’d like to see Blaster and him together in place of Ojo, see what that’s like, as he was actually a little impactful
Garrity 6 asked to do it all, so ends up not doing anything with total focus
Chizzy 6 again a victim of having little support and having to come deep
Loft 5 put himself about
Wilson 7 different team with him and a change of formation
Uche 6 fought and linked up well
Walters 4 not fair to just throw him in, but did nothing

We have two categories of player at Vale.
Those that do everything right and should be picked every game, loved by the fans - who in reality get 50% of decisions wrong.
Those reviled by the fans that do everything wrong and should never play again - who in reality get 50% of decisions right.
Arblaster is the only absolute quality player we have.

Ripley
Massey Debrah Smith Yak
< Sang Lowe Grant >
< Devine Chislett >
Garrity
No first choice wingbacks or centre midfielders, awesome. Last time Sang played CM? Barnsley away? For that reason, give him some help in the centre. Back 4 flat as a pitta bread, don’t go over half way. 0-0

If he does stay I think 30 mins max every game regardless of what the situation on the pitch is, because literally playing him a little too long can result in months out. Even if he scores 3 the previous time out, just treat him as unavailable for any longer. Just use him as an impact sub because load management is never going to work with him, he’ll break down if he’s played too regularly.
-
We need a starting forward. Someone like Harrison who links the play and is robust. If we need to combine Wilson and Thomas’ wages to get that player, then I’d go with that then have Loft and Uche as back up.

No Ojo and Arblaster, take a point at kickoff.

A philosophical pondering.
Is it a reminder that we are above the relegation zone and could climb the table with a few wins, as the teams are around us? Or is it a reminder that we are on a gradual trajectory of decline that can only continue one way?

I expect DC to make Cheltenham real contenders to beat the drop with a WLDL gradual climb.
Cambridge have restructured and will strengthen and solidify in the ‘largely safe spaces’.
Bristol Rovers have got someone serious handling their talent and budget now.
Carlisle, Northampton, Leyton Orient etc. have shrewd operators around who won’t go down without a fight.
Fleetwood will throw the bank at it and seem to have not been derailed financially yet looking at their managerial pick up.
Burton just need a decent manager, they have a quality squad.
Make no mistake, Vale are in a huge dogfight and some make or break decisions will decide our fate.

I expect us to get something from this. A rare Saturday home game and players slowly coming back from injury. A draw at least, but then there’s pressure on the Wycombe game. They were woeful last season and we should have won handily away. We just need that solid starting spine to be regularly available, get through to January and then offload as much dead wood as possible to bring in another L1 striker.

The most effective we are attacking wise is when Chiz, Devine and Garrity interchange and act as 10s together. Keep that until we have a decent target man to use.
-
it's an irony that we've won so many 1-0, then score 3 and lose. Football.
-
Loft’s got some nerve to step up to the spot with every man, woman and child in black and white having something to say about him.
Keep going lad.

Got to play as full strength side as possible. This could be 0 for a loss, or 2nd round prize money, 3rd round on tv, 3rd round prize money, a prem club in round 4 and that could possibly be on tv! I know it’s a long way off all that, but it’s a realistic path with every aspect netting more and more cash + gate receipts.

I think I’m right in thinking if we fail to beat Exeter we will have gone more than 1/4 of total league games without winning a game.
17th September since we last won in the league.October n/a, November n/a
Say we do somehow beat Exeter, what then? Give him another 3 games to lose because he finally got a win? It’s not a meter that can be totted up with win tokens. The long term trajectory is not just down, it’s vertical free fall.
For the love of sense man, just go!
(Unless he would stay as assistant under a decent manager, but I can’t see that happening.)

We need to play 3 behind a target man. This 2 10s malarkey is toothless. If the formation doesn’t change, the results don’t change. If the results don’t change, the manager will change.
-
Get rid of our worst players, retain our best players and sign players better or at least as good as our current best players.
-
I'd be amazed if there wasn't work going on behind the scenes on a) who will be interim manager when Andy goes b) a list of suitable and realistic candidates to replace him long term.

Garrity is averaging nearly 1 in 3 from midfield. Looking like 10-15 easy for the season. 1/2 mil for him would be a nice return for a player signed as a L2 fringe player.
-
The sad thing is if Crosby does get sacked, we will lose the coaching, passion, personality and player communication he brings. That is all valuable and does not require him to be manager. I'd like him as assistant under a different manager but obviously that's untenable.

The best squad business we could do in January is in-house.
Secure Walters on a 5 year deal, and then proceed to give him time off the bench regularly.
Highlight that we can offer Arblaster stability, playing time and development and emphasise he enjoys playing here - to ensure he stays.
Map out a clear plan of action for Devine to convince Spurs to let him carry on developing here.
Sort out cover for Clark and rotate a few parts = even better. But those 3 points above alone would make it a successful January.

Someone would have to be lined up to take over straight away. We couldn’t leave the assistant in charge while we interview, meanwhile the Christmas schedule is sending us further down the table. If a change is to be made, sooner rather than later would make sense, so they can assess the squad and prepare for the window in January.
but I think we’ll carry on with Crosby unless we literally don’t win in the league in November. Yak, Jones and Lowe are hopefully round the corner. Then Balmer soon after that. That’ll be good.
As a side note, who’s the starter with Yak and Smith, Balmer or Debrah ~ if we ever get that luxury of picking?
Id rather develop our own young players and pick Debrah.

That was coming.

We need to have a productive January.

Maybe she was considered the person with the best knowledge, vision and character for the job of all those who applied, with no unrelated factors considered.
