The team will get my full support tomorrow but this window reminds me of the one where we sold Alnwick and Grant and that didn’t end well.
I wouldn’t say it’s as a bad a window as that one when we literally sold the Crown Jewels, but I’m really struggling to believe that we haven’t signed a LWB, or striker and moved Loft on, as it just hasn’t worked for him here.
I think, unnecessarily, we can look forward to another similar end to last season.
Is it me, or does anyone else get the feeling we are ‘playing for time’ until something happens i.e. a really big move for one of the youngsters, a ‘Robbie’ takeover or some other capital injection into the club.
It feels again to be a case of our aspirations being nothing more than getting the right side of the red line come May and ‘going again’ rather than trying to establish ourselves as a solid mid table side which we can then try & build on. Maybe this is all we can afford to do??

Ok.
So irrespective of whether this turns out to be a masterstroke or the biggest damp squib since squibs became damp, we have….
….signed someone in and around the Manchester United first team. Again, that’s Manchester United. Now they may be an utter shambles at the moment, but this is still one of the three/four biggest clubs in the world.
I have been as critical of Flitcroft as anyone and we’ve had some shockers in the transfer windows he’s masterminded, but credit where it’s due as this shows we are seen as good place for the young talent of the top clubs.
Anyway, welcome Dan and keep off that treatment table!!! 🙏

Great result last night. Seemed a different style judging by the line-up and possession stats.
The nature of the win seems as impressive as the Bolton, Boro, Barnsley (1st half) games were disappointing. Shots on goal, youngsters excelling etc.
So credit where it’s due, well done AC for (finally) changing from the tippy-tappy stuff which was boring people to death and which resulted in some really limp performances recently. Also, a very well done for integrating the young ‘uns.
In typical Vale fashion, we’ll no doubt lose at Carlisle, but a win will I think create a nice gap from the bottom 4.

Can’t make tonight (un)fortunately as I’m away with the Breadknife. I like the look of the team in some respects, albeit am slightly concerned that either Devine or Garrity will have to sacrifice themselves to do the grunt work in midfield (not Garrity’s game at all IMO) but it is what it is. I’ve no idea what the result will be but can’t see us keeping a clean sheet.

If it wasn't Crosby it be someone else do you think the manager tells players go out there and play terribly it seems whatever he said at half time he needs keep repeating till we start winning games regularly as the response second half was brilliant .
My concern with Crosby is that he respects other teams too much and is more wary of them than what we can do .
I agree completely with your 2nd point but not the 1st. The 2nd half “turnaround” was because they eased off, resting their best players. Yes we were better - we could hardly be any worse - but Barnsley were coasting at this point. After Shorrock scored, did we even get near their box??? Yet if it had been roles reversed, we know exactly how it would have ended.

This is spot on. The only players we have had over the last three seasons who can play wing back properly have been
1. Benning - who was not good enough for league 1
2. Gibson - who we sold and was prone to injury
2, Clarke - who would be very good, but currently injured
3. Worrall - whose efforts to play the role, probably took 2 years off his playing career
Yet why we continue to persevere with this system is beyond me. It didn't work last season and it isn't working this season.
Well I fear it’s not Crosby, but orders from Flitcroft given that’s how his (expensively-assembled) Bury team won promotion. But why 3 at the back? It’s such a specialised system that you have to have the right players to do it properly. Great if you have billionaire owners who can sign 18 players in pre-season (and still get it wrong) but I’d argue not so clever if you’re a struggling L1 team trying to survive on 6,000 - 7,000 gates. And is this the formation the junior teams are playing, surely it can’t be???? If it is, then that is just utterly bonkers if you ask me.

I was hoping that Crosby’s post-match interview would at least provide something to cling onto but to be talking about players lacking pride 1st half was concerning to say the least. Why, when he’s the guy that is supposed to motivate them??

Or you could say that a depleted Barnsley would be mid-table like us and that's why we more then matched them in the second half. If we'd pinched a point that's Barnsley's fault, not ours.
We can only play what the opposition put on the pitch.
I don’t disagree, but Barnsley chose to sub their best players, not because they were depleted due to injuries. And it’s not as if injuries are a new thing to us is it?? Ok, Ollie’s was bad luck, but Wilson is injury prone, Ojo seems injury prone, Clarke the same…..

Can somebody with far more tactical nous than me explain why 3-5-2 is the modus operandi??
It’s a system that needs specialist wing-backs i.e. people that have the energy to get up & down the field and be inventive in attack and defensively solid. It strikes me that such players are rare as hen’s teeth, or am I wrong? Are they in fact more plentiful that traditional full-backs / wingers??
You could make the same argument about Centre Backs, as the system needs the wide CB’s to not only be tall to be able to be able to defend balls into the box, but also be good footballers to link up and join the play and have pace to cover the wide areas when the WB’s are caught out of position. Again, are these types of CB’s plentiful??

Phil, the game was lost in the first half by a total inept performance.
They never even got out of first gear to go 3-0 up with John McAtee being the best player on the pitch by a country mile & totally running the show. Then Cole had the defence, in particular Debrah, all over the place whilst he was on the pitch.
The tide turned when between the 46th & 68th minute, Barnsley took off their 4 best players to save them for Fridays game because the points were already in the bag at Vale.
I saw a quote on twitter which describes yesterday perfectly, we are playing like the Dog & Duck
Yep, that’s exactly what a lot of people are missing. They basically declared at HT and started resting players. So anyone buoyed by the 2nd half “recovery” really needs to put this into context. If they’d kept the full team out I’ve no doubt we’d have been looking at 5/6 goals against.

But u didn’t against Wigan
Didn’t what???
Just as an aside, if you look on Wigan’s forum their players were (quite rightly) getting slated for having been on the bevy in Glasgow just 48 hours before the game.
Now I’m not saying this had anything to do with what was generally viewed as an insipid (Vale-like) first 45 mins, but…
Anyway, we’ll call it an outstanding Vale performance if you like. Still doesn’t deflect from todays shocker, last weeks shocker, or the Boro shocker.

Including of course the customary one straight from kick off. Frustrated doesn’t come close this evening, and I thought Boro was bad.

The future is bright. Crosby is proven at getting the best out of young players. We've got the best crop for decades. Come on Carol, stick with him.
I’m glad you put ‘young’ in there because if that’s the best of Massey god help us when he has an off-day.
-
Nobody should be taken in by the 2nd half “comeback”. That first half was a managerial disaster class. There’s only one place we’re heading with that clown in charge. He’s giving Gammon & Michael Brown a run for their money.
How Massey gets in before Lomax…. well answers on a post card etc etc. I’m starting to bore myself now with the catalogue of errors.
No doubt we’ll get the “started poorly, played a very good team, we won the 2nd half” bullsh!t as usual.
