It’s been a reasonably busy month for Port Vale FC as they added two permanent deals and three loan signings to their squad.
Kurtis Guthrie and Jake Taylor have already featured while loanees Tom Scott, Will Swan and Mustapha Olagunju are in the playing squad. Here’s how Vale’s January business happened:
Port Vale's January 2021 business
4 January 2021: Manager John Askey leaves the club after a string of poor results but the club say that signings will be made by interim manager Danny Pugh.
11 January 2021: Port Vale sign former loanee Jake Taylor on a permanent three and a half year contract. The move means that winger Harry McKirdy is deregistered from the Vale’s League squad.
15 January 2021: Following his release by Bradford City, Port Vale announce the signing of striker Kurtis Guthrie on a deal until the end of the season. As a result, transfer-listed Theo Robinson is deregistered from the squad.
25 January 2021: After an injury to reserve keeper Dino Visser, Port Vale add former Man City keeper Tom Scott to their squad.
1 February 2021: Port Vale complete two deadline day deals adding defender Mustapha Olagunju and striker Will Swan.

However, Vale may now play the rest of the season with two players – Theo Robinson and Harry McKirdy – deregistered from their League squad while Leon Legge also looks unlikely to play again.

Pretty happy with the permanent moves – Kurtis and Jake – obviously the jury’s still out on the loanees. I would love to see Tom Scott perhaps become the long-term successor to Scott Brown. It’s disappointing that we couldn’t ship anyone out but I guess the uncertainty over the National League season makes it difficult for clubs there to commit to signing and that may have been a factor.
In a perfect world would have been nice to get an experienced CB in and got rid of some of the deadwood.
The Jury is still out. Would have liked to have seen two fullbacks departing I.e. Mills & Fitzpatrick as P.S. said neither could stop the constant stream of centres coming into our penalty area and neither were good at tackling. Also if Legge is no longer playing for us due to money/contract clauses, have we got a big/ commanding centre half to replace him. This is imperative as it is almost the most important position in the team.Smith needs somebody like that.
New fresher legs Coming in, we can still make at least the playoffs. Will have to wait and what the new manager thinks of the squad.
