John Askey leaves Port Vale – his time at Vale Park
Former youth team player Askey joined the club in February 2019 succeeding Neil Aspin as manager. He managed to steer the club clear of relegation by the end of the 2018-19 season. He looked to have turned the side’s fortunes around in the 2019-20 season. He brought in the likes of Scott Burgess, David Amoo, Mark Cullen and loanees Jake Taylor and Mitch Clark which transformed Vale’s performances. The side earned a money spinning FA Cup tie against Manchester City and the side were just out of the play-offs when the season was finished early. However, after a bright start to the 2020-21 season, the team’s form fell away and by Boxing Day the side had just one win from their last ten League games. Following a 4-0 away loss at Mansfield Town, the club announced Askey’s departure.

Very sad that John Askey and Dave Kevan have gone. They deserved better.
They did a great job 2 years ago to save us from relegation. Had no luck last season with the virus, and this year have had injuries to key players. They should have been given at least a few more games.
Please not Sinclair to take over.
Football is so ruthless

The man was hounded out , in my opinion. He was treated badly by players who’d had someone whispering in their ears , and they bought it . Disgraceful. I have followed Port Vale for a long time , and I’ve never seen a manager treated like that. The change in form came about as a result of it. Of that I am convinced. Good luck to you John, and to Dave Kevan also.

Dont talk wet, no manager survives such a poor run of form at any team.

It would be very interesting to learn what strange things were going on as suggested by John Askey ? I am not a hire and fire them sort of person but six points from twelve games is in anybody’s language a poor return from a team that earlier in the season had played good football and looked as though they could beat any team in Div 2 home or away.
They have slipped to being the team that gives away late goals and the defence is easy to penetrate. On top of this problem they also have strikers who are not scoring goals. This in my mind means that somewhere along the way John Askey has lost the dressing room as the players don’t seem to be playing for him. In such circumstances you have to sack somebody and it obviously cannot be the whole squad so the Manager has to go and a new face should be brought in with firm ideas and stricter control of the players intentions – and get them playing the way they can and should play or else ! They are on decent wages so they have got to start earning them.
