New Goalkeeper

Well Burt football is all about opinions, I agree with the Eagle, the penalty was needless. Just watched in again a couple of times, the player was going wide, Tommon should know the trick that any forward going wide will pull, he will fall down at any excuse, Tommo is a pro and he should know better. His confidence seems to have gone and he is not as commanding as he has been in the past. I still think that as a pair Tommon and Martin are ok, and I would channel our limited resources elsewhere

Both keepers are good enough, they've both proved that in the past. They've been poorly coached.

As i said the other day, every keeper whos got into our team in the last ten years has gone backwards under the coaching of Mark Grew.

However, "Grewy" is "Vale through and through", so we'll just let him carry on regardless.

The penny drops - pity it hasnt with Mickey "the messiah" - We havnt had a proper keeper since Goodlad hung up his gloves.

The 2 we have presently would be unable to keep a clean sheet if we had the Back 4 from Man U or City in front of them.

I dont beleive we are capable of keeping one or 2 clean sheets all season on present form, which means we need to score 2 or 3 at the other end to get a result.

Couldn't agree more myself, said it for ages,as soon as Grewy gets around them they seem rooted to the line and never hold onto anything, it's all bat it away.

Goodlad had his dodgy moments, too.

Me too. I've got nothing against Grew, he was a very good keeper. And I'm sure he's Vale through and through. But he's been associated with failure on the coaching/management side for too long, and should have gone a while ago. Both keepers have ability, I was gobsmacked when Tommo was picked ahead of Martin for the Bury game last season. He'd not done much wrong. But then Tommo was awesome for the first three months, so you couldn't argue with the decision. But we have now gone in a year from having two really good goalkeepers to not having one you can really have confidence in. They don't just lose ability, so it must be down to coaching, atmosphere in the club, coordination with the back 4 (5), fitness. All stuff the management team should be taking care of, particularly when the assistant manager is an ex-keeper.

I'll put my tin hat on for this one, but with Stoke saying that they have no problems loaning us players now, would it be worthwhile toi try a cheeky loan for Carlo Nash.

One of my Stokie mates says he is still class and could still do a job even in the prem.

Surely competitve games would be better than the reserves to keep him sharp for them.

I know very litle about sports science so here's a question that somebody else might be able to answer:

Has Tomo got too much muscle mass, particularly in his upper body? He's ripped to f... but you wonder whether he's gone past the point where it's the ideal build for goalkeeping.

The answer to the question is quite simple...

Can you ever remember a top keeper being built like that? Or any top teams encouraging their keepers to body build to the extreme.

The ideal frame for a goalkeeper is lean and defined. Look at Cech and Van der Sar, you would never enter them into a weight lifting competition.
