  1. I predicted this exact retained list earlier in the week, bar Leutweiler who I didn’t know was out of contract. This wasn’t some incredibly foresight, but just plainly obvious. I’m not sure why people are outraged.

I’m not surprised by Uche, even though I’m no fan. Hundreds of games above League 2. I imagine he’ll reject it and be on his way. Wynne is clearly someone Moore rates.

Flitcroft built this squad with a two-year window in mind. The vast majority of new signings were signed on two-year deals: Loft, Grant, Lowe, Sang, Debrah, Yak. These are both manifestly not good enough for where we want to be, but contractually owed probably between 75-120k by PVFC over the next 12 months, and perfectly entitled to collect that whether they play or not. We can bleat all we want, but Flitcroft shafted us not only last season, but next.

I’ve no doubt efforts will be made to move these players on, but will they go? Who is going to take them on at the same wage? We all publicly and widely deride Loft and Sang, and then hope there’s another professional football club willing to take them off our hands for similar wages. It’s fantasy land. We either move them on and continue to pay 20-30% of their wages to play for another club, pay up hundreds of thousands to ‘sack’ them, or they’re stuck here.

Perhaps the reality has sunk in for a few. 23/24 was a disaster and will not be undone by August. Clarke had the luxury of completely reshaping his squad in 2021, signing 15 players. Moore will be able to sign 6-7, perhaps. He is stuck with players who probably don’t like the club, who have a negative relationship with the fans, with a squad blighted by a relegation. He’s going to have to plan for a season involving Tom Sang and Conor Grant, I imagine.

It’s a huge job - to revitalise the club with largely the same group of players we’ve rightly decided aren’t up to it, with a very disillusioned fanbase. Anything approaching the top 7 next year is a good season. I imagine the youth players will be crucial - performing for cheap, allowing us to invest some of the leftover budget in a real area of need.

I think 24/25 will be a fine but not spectacular season. We usually operate with between the 6th-10th highest wage in League 2, and gut instinct tells me that’s where we’ll be next May. If Moore performs his usual trick of getting relegated aides immediately into the playoffs then it’s a job well done.

Did we lose this sort of money under Smurfwaite? Under Bratt? We lost £3.5m this season.

Regardless if the budget’s crap there are only two people to blame. Those running the club and the collective money of the fans.

Different financial landscape. Every club loses money - you have to. Bratt and Smurthwaite lived in different times.

Funded by the 5000 supporters who buy season tickets. Some L2 clubs can't even fit 5000 people into their poxy little grounds.

We've been told for two years that we can't compete with Derby, Pompey, Bolton, etc...

Now I expect us to be a big fish in a small pond, beating the likes of Colchester, Morecombe, Crawley, etc...

DM has until November to convince me. He's lucky to be given that chance, having been the worst manager I've ever seen at the club.

    No excuses!

The club loses 1m+ a year in the very best case scenario. PVFC is funded by, and exists, due to Carol’s continual desire to throw money at a loss-making company in a loss-making industry.

Those 5000 STs, btw, if they were all adult ones (which they’re not), would cover £1.75m. Try and get out of League 2 on that budget.

Been wondering this afternoon if there is even the patience at the club to give him as long as he needs. Even taking into account seeing some improvements in the squad, let's say we are middling around mid table next January with inconsistent results, I am not sure the pressure will be off him because of his terrible record in game management and style of play especially at home.

For him to make it another 12 months, we are going to have to finish top half. Anybody's guess where we will be and I remain unconvinced Moore can do it.

Dread to think what the managerial shortlist looks like if things go bad in League 2. Suppose it will depend on who gets the first conversation with Carol.

Seen folk demanding/expecting us to finish top 3, personally funded by Carol.

There’s probably going to be a lot of disappointment next season. This mess isn’t going to be fixed in the next 3 months.

  5. Doncaster lost 1 of their last 18 ,winning 10 in succession, and climbing from 22nd to 5th. This was a squad McCann have created having been appointed in May. They lost 16 of their first 30. The recruitment they did in January of Matthew Craig, Hakeeb Adelakun, and Timothee LO-Tutala transformed a very bad squad into a very good one.

Perhaps a lesson that sometimes good managers with proven track records go through poor spells (even with a full summer) but sacking them at the first instance isn’t the best response, and 3-4 good signings can reorient the ship.

We have the evidence base that Moore can win a lot of games when he has good players. I think it’s a foolish move to get rid of him before we’ve at least had the chance to give him decent players, and not “the worst squad in our history”.

  6. Very interesting comments from the current Huddersfield management about the state of the squad and club. Maybe Moore’s record there has deeper reasons than first appear - which could also apply to us?

  7. We’ve seen enough of Smith to know his qualities and his level. He’s been a model of consistency for almost a decade at this point. We know exactly what he can and can’t do.

His poor form this season can be attributed, in my view, to a very poor defensive structure around him. I don’t think it can be seriously argued he’s physically declining at 28. He’s had a poor year but I imagine better defenders would struggle being flanked by Debrah, Yak, Grant et al.

As a player with recent ish experience of League 2 promotion he’s a no-brainer to retain. We’ve got the evidence that he’s a good centre half.

I can see it from both points tho. They’ve been hiding all year so it’s no surprise to see it’ll continue after the final whistle

I just think they’re really, really bad at football relative to the other teams at the level.

Lot of comments about cowardice, hiding, lack of bottle, lack of fight, which is true in a sense - but we’ve gone down because the vast majority of this squad isn’t very good at football. Giving them hellfire isn’t going to change that.

What’s everyone’s views on the decision to stay in the centre circle after the game instead of the usual lap of honour? For me, it screams the word ‘ cowards ‘ they should be getting up close & personal to the fan base who have been incredible this year to be fair. To at least show some appreciation for the continuous support & be ready to face any abuse or criticism thrown their way which let’s be honest is more than deserved after an atrocious & embarrassing season

No I think it’s sensible and the correct decision as it would bring no good.

I’m not sure forcing a group of grown men to slowly walk in front other grown adults hurling abuse at them for being bad at their job is supposed to do. Most of these players will be here next year. What will be achieved?

They’ve been poor but abuse is pointless. We’re down. Go home and enjoy the summer.

  10. The best thing to do is not react to or photograph the plane. Ignore it and do not engage. We can’t exactly give anything back this season. Laughing at Stoke for having billionaire owners and surviving in a division we aspire to reach is weak.

The moron who did it for Stoke’s relegation on the wrong day really set us up.

  11. I think it’s quite normal for folk not to bother today. It has the relative importance of a pre-season friendly, and some are rightly furious by how poor it’s been. I went through a similar feeling after derby. Absolute despair by how bad it was - and took a few weeks off as I knew it wasn’t good for me.

Also fine if people want to go. A pre-match pint, the routine for the last time till August, seeing a few pals - it’s good for you after a long week regardless of the football.

Just let people do what they want, imo. Most of us will be trudging back in August.

For the first time ever, I'm actually going to disagree with you.

Going on from what Darren Moore said to the sponsors on Monday and his pre-match interview yesterday. I think that their is going to be some big changes to put this avoidable mess right.

My guess is that the first thing that he will do, will be to release every single player out of contract. It's the easiest thing to sort out first to make some room. Plus, none of them have performed for us over the past 12/18 months. So, no bother at all in letting them go.

I include the reserve keeper in that too because I'm not sure if it is a good thing to have someone on the bench that know's he's not going play and also think that affects the goalkeeper that is playing because he know's  that he's got no competition.

I also think that their maybe 1 or 2 surprises when it come's player's under contract.

It's going to be a very interesting retain list next week.

Well, the difference in mine and your view is that you think Leutweiler and Wynne will be gone and I’ll think they’ll stick around.

The cold reality is that Loft, Grant, Sang, Debrah, and others that have underperformed will most probably be here next season.

I hope we make some big changes but fear it may take 12 months to undo such a sorry mess.

  13. Think people will be disappointed by the retained list. There just isn’t much room for manoeuvre. I can see absolute hell up on Monday morning.

I don’t think we will ‘pay off’ anyone - a potential waste of money if someone is willing to loan them/take on most of their wages later on. It’s hundreds of thousands of pounds up front, to pay off the number of players some are calling for.

I think Massey and Wilson will be released, the loanees sent back, Uche and Wynne offered terms (which Uche will reject), and maybe 3-4 put on a transfer list. I’m not for one second saying I’m happy with any of this, just a prediction.

Like it or lump it, I think 15ish of this squad will be here next season, including Sang, Loft, and the other maligned lads.

Again, we are going with this small mentality that we are just little Port Vale, so , who would want to buy us or play for us. That mentality needs to stop.

We are only one of a very limited number of clubs that can call themselves a professional football club, that is unique in its own terms and anybody whi is anybody would see it being a privilege to be involved with a professional football like playing for Port Vale, working for Port Vale or owning Port Vale.

Also, you can not make a statement like "I don't see many people banging on the door to buy this place" why would you? Are you the owner or CEO of Port Vale? No, of course you are not. So you will not have any knowledge if anybody wants to buy or invest in the football club.

By the way, this is me not saying I want Carol to sell.  I just want her to crack on now & learn by the mistakes that most fans have seen & been telling her about for the last 18 months. Make the changes needed and pull the resources together to win promotion of that crap league asap.

I'm just tired of reading that their no one is banging on our door to take over little Port Vale.

You have all been brainwashed by Bratt & Smurf

Do you know what? The day that Carol decides to move on and sell the club, I'm also 100% convinced that with all the contacts that she's now got in business and football, she will find an even better owner than herself to take over the club

There are very few people happy to write off a million a year minimum.

Even less with the desire and means to lose 5m a year to finish in the top 6 of League 1.

Virtually no one who would spend 15m to keep us in the Championship.

Lower league football is a circus and a financial black hole - hence why it attracts unsavoury characters, as good people without ulterior motives (and retain sanity) want nothing to do with it.

  15. Not many people would want to buy PVFC - or have the money to keep us going.

You are virtually guaranteed to lose a million a year, and there’s a ceiling on the club’s revenue which would require losses of 5m+ a year to even compete in the top 6.

If you deliver the fans’ dreams of the championship, kiss goodbye to 15m a year unless it’s immediate relegation.

PVFC is a financial black hole with a very narrow route to success. The ground is an archaic tip. We’re still lucky to have a local owner willing to support the losses.

  17. I think folk get too caught up in demanding a certain ‘type’ of signing.

    Experience. Proven. Winners. Tough men.

Just sign good players. Restricting ourselves by chasing niche profiles arbitrarily selected by Flitcroft is what for us into this mess.

If a player is good and experienced, sign him. If he’s good and young, sign him. Sign good footballers who make us better imo, not to fit a narrative about ‘who we are’.

National league striker? Not those hopeless prospects again. Ricky Miller was meant to be a non league powerhouse and was crap for us. Non league players are non league for a reason.

Yes, the signing of one player around 8 years ago who had a litany of personal problems means we should write off any players at the same level in 2024.

I’m sure Posh adopt the same approach with Mason-Clark and Edwards.

Tolaj would be an absolutely outstanding signing - as anyone who has watched him can attest to
