  1. Here's the Scunthorpe Preview!

We're joined by friend of the show Jord to talk through a few things. We get final thoughts on Walsall at home, talk through the post-match interviews and then have a discussion on a message sent from one of the listeners about the current situation at the club. Before we get into a Scunthorpe preview, we also discuss mental health at this difficult time for lots of people, with Jord who is a local mental health advocate.

Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

  2. The Walsall preview is up!

We first pay tribute to a big Vale fan, and then a popular ex-player by talking to people who remember them well (Thanks to Tom and Steve for their contributions). We then head into the weeks news as COVID hits the Vale again, and we talk stats! Then into a Walsall preview, our schoolboy defending was the final straw for some Valiants in the reverse fixture, can we beat these this time around?

Rest In Peace Charlie Holland and Jinking Jonny Jeffers

  3. We'll certainly give it some time on the next podcast mate. I remember him well, one of the first proper wingers down at Vale Park from when I started going in 1992 as the conveyor belt of top wingers really kicked in.

Bad week for deaths in the Vale family, we'll make sure it's all covered.

Hi guys when are the Jake Taylor and John boom boom Mccombe interviews appearing on the pod ???

The Jake Taylor pod has been delayed, we're just confirming when we can get him on. I think we're looking at the 2nd Feb for Boom Boom.

There's obviously different ways you can play it; and it depends on the other players available to you, right? How attacking are your fullbacks, where does your width come from, do you mainly attack centrally or from wide? The Liverpool front 3 are world class players with great chemistry, so it looks seamless. We can't decide who the main striker is, which side Worrall should play, whether Amoo will play more than 3 games in a row, whether Monty is a winger or fullback.

Askey prioritised system over players; to me, I can't understand why he didn't look at a 3-5-2/(or even a 3-4-3) to be honest - you could have had Gibbons/Monty on either side, or even Worrall on the right. The defence could have some extra cover for the lack of pace. Joyce would still be part of a 3, playing to his strengths. In a 3-5-2 you could partner up strikers, or even play Amoo and allow him to drift wide and take up those positions allowing a midfielder to break forward into the box. There were plenty of options to offer flexibility.

I would agree with that point you've made about Askey prioritising the system, and when you look at his signings they were strange as they never really fitted his preferred system. Aside from Rodney, neither Cullen or Robinson really fit a front 3, so I have found that confusing.

I jest a little when I use Liverpool as a comparison. Like you say, we can't decide who our best three are, so it's always going to look disjointed.

I would also consider us playing 3 at the back, but unless you play a 3-4-3, you're putting Worrall in centre-mid.

Some great points again, I shall bring this up with the lads on Friday!

Rob, I was listening to the podcast while driving from Houston to Tulsa today. A very entertaining 45 minutes, which shortened the road a bit.
I’d like to point out something , if the lads don’t mind. I don’t know what you were speaking into , a regular mic , or pc mic etc, but it sounded great , very warm sounding , just like radio . The other mics sounded very shrill and tin like. Just wondering what the lads speak into. A good mic can make a huge difference to a broadcast. I love the podcasts, and I look forward to them every week. If I can be of any help in the mic Dept. , I’d be glad to help. Thanks to all.

Thanks for the feedback mate. We'd appreciate any help in terms of the mic's. I'll message you.

    Hi Lads,
Maybe a point worth mentioning this week. I bought a 10 game flexI ticket back in the summer, this week I’ve received an e-mail from the club stating that I’ll be able to get the final 11 home games, starting with Walsall on Saturday, free via iFollow codes. Not sure how well this has been communicated by the club other than directly messaging supporters, in case some out there haven’t checked their inboxes.
    UTV! Dave.

    Hi Dave,

I'll bring it up on the pod. Cheers!

Thought Johnny was harsh with his marks for Hurst and let Amoo off lightly, didn't think there was much to choose between them yesterday.

I would add that when Rodney moved to the left, I think that showed how a 433 should be played with the wide men tucking in close to the striker.  I suppose that's what you get by playing a forward in that position not Hurst who is essentially a left midfielder pushed forward.

I think that's an interesting point. If you don't have forwards in those wide positions, is it more of a 4-5-1? It certainly felt more like that under Askey. If you look at Liverpool who are the experts at 4-3-3, a front line of Salah, Firmino and Mane includes 3 forward, who press further up the pitch.

A great point, I'll bring this up on the next pod. Thanks for the feedback!

    Morning Ale&Vale Podcast team.

Sunday morning listening today and will as always enjoy the banter. Credit to you all for keeping it amusing and factual. Bezza’s watch obviously has all the answers!

    UTV

Ha! That watch needs its own podcast!

  10. Here's our Grimsby review!

A 3-0 victory, Pugh's the man! It wasn't perfect but so much better than some of the performances served up recently. We run through the game and why we think the performance was markedly different to the Mansfield game. We then have a quick chat on whether Pugh has increased his chances of the full-time gig, and whether pulling a win out reduces the need for an 'experienced' manager.

Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

  11. Grimsby Preview!

A quiet week again at the Vale! We talk Taylor and other transfer targets, then get in to the manager situation and discuss a couple of names that have cropped up during the week. Then into a Grimsby preview against a manager who surely would have been on Vale's shortlist if available. Signs of improvement in their first game under Paul Hurst, will that continue? And what will Pugh do to get Vale back on track.

Available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts. And here! https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

  12. Emergency Pod!

We tried to keep it short, but failed yet again! Askey is gone, and we have a final discussion on why we ended up at this point. Then we look to future, and discuss the names out there and whether they would be a fit for the club. It's a big couple of weeks for the club, lets see where it goes! Are there any names we didn't mention that you like the sound of? Let us know!

Ive long suspected that McKirdy, Robibson and Clarke werent Askey signings or that he was heavily leant on to bring them in.
I also believe he has wanted rid of Pope for a while and has been prevented from doing so.
All that does is send signals to the players that the manager has no authority. When you combine this with the facy that one or two didnt like him in the first place, it has created a situation where the players rule the roost and we have gone from a cohesive unit with a strong dressing room to a circus in a matter of months.
Askey isnt responsible for that, ultimately someone else at the club is. We could play Agatha Christie all day (is it Carol, Patrick, Rudgie, Sinclair, Garlick?) but that wont alter the situation.
Carol needs to hold her hands up and admit the mistakes but ultimately despite it not being down to him and despite plainly having the rug pulled from underneath him, Askey cant fix it, and he has to go.

It's a fair point Rob. We've heard the rumours about those 3 not necessarily being his signings, but I haven't seen/heard any proper evidence. Plenty of smoke on those ones however.

We were talking about it on our whatsapp group last night after the 'Busgate' rumour turned up (I've seen several things to confirm that story was not accurate). It really depends on the other roles at the club and how they intertwine with Askey's. If you bring other people in to the football side, without the manager being involved in the decision and it not supposed to impact his role, then it's going to impact his authority regardless. He needed a tight dressing room, with everyone pulling in the same direction. The signings and potentially also this disruption have made a right mess. I don't know anything for sure, but I don't think it's all Harry McKirdy. If it was you'd just have paid him up.

I doubt we'll find out what's truly happened. What I do know is that this has to come to a conclusion one way or another at some point, because the club can't continue like it is at the moment.

An extra long bonus edition then?  I'll leave it a day or three to avoid breaking crockery.

Ha, fair point! Obviously can't go through it all. Tried our best though. What do you think? It would be interesting to hear some other views. I suspect quite a lot of people who have been more patient (like me) are nearing the end of their tether.

  15. Here's our Mansfield review.

Another horrific performance as we gift Mansfield their first home win of the season with a 0-4 defeat. A completely gutless performance with few individual performances if any. We go through where it went wrong, and we revisit the Askey debate after his strange post-match interview.

  16. Our Mansfield preview is now available!

Happy new year everyone! We talk through Carol's New Years statement and what we think it means. Then we have a chat about transfer targets for January and also the danger that we may lose a couple of players. Then into a Mansfield preview! They haven't won at home yet, and got a bounce from switching managers. Is this a winnable game, and what should we do with players returning?

Just listening to the Barrow review. As is evident from my posts earlier in the thread, i suspect that Mitch hasnt sufdenly become a problem over the last few weeks as a result of hanging around with McKirdy.
I saw with my own eyes that he used to associate with the likes of Miller and Whitfield and were relatively openly taking the piss out of the manager at the end of season presentation in May 2019.
So you have to question the manager in resigning him, and in signing McKirdy in the summer.
McKirdy's reputation was well known, so why would a manager who is renknowned for building a cohesive squad, who all buy into the managers work ethic, sign a player like that? Outside pressure to do so?
Similarly, im not convinced he ever wanted Clarke back at the club. He could have made a move for him before signing Mills if he really wanted him, and i dont think he was that keen even when Gibbo and Mills were out. So why make the signing? Pressure from the fans? Pressure from the owners?
90% of the players Askey has wanted to bring to the club since he came here haven't been good enough. So why on earth would he then go and sign players like Clarke, McKirdy and Robinson when they dont fit with his ethics or what he wants to build?
Something is wrong with the manager/owner relationship. Either its too cosy, or he hasnt got the balls to tell them "no, im not bringing that player to the club".

    Great points Rob

  18. Here's the Barrow review (And a Bradford preview!)

Another horrible afternoon as we lose 2-0 to 22nd place Barrow. 1 win 10, and frankly some totally inept performances to run with it. We run through the game, but the overall discussion is whether the manager's position is tenable any longer and there's plenty of frustration all round. Bradford doesn't look easy after they make it 3 wins on the bounce. Let us know what you think!
