Still enjoying it lads, so keep up the good work. Might be an idea to mix it up a bit and have a "mystery" third person who might have a different take? Could get a bit "samey" otherwise.

I think so too. I'll discuss it with the lads and see what we can do. Appreciate the feedback!

Taking your point about the dark arts on board lads and rewatching their penalty I'm 100% convinced if Conlon spins around, holds his ankle and squeals when he makes contact with Hannat we would have been talking about a red card for Luke instead of a Cambridge penalty. That's what would other teams would have done.

Possibly true. We're not good at that. Askey has us playing hard but honest. It seems unlikely we have the players to change tack.

Thanks for listening by the way!

I'm not one for over reaction and cant be doing with hysteria, but feel you are being overly kind in your assessments lads. I think it might be down to the Carol factor, and that nobody wants to be critical when we had such a feel good factor around the club in pre season. But for me serious questions are going to have to be asked if things don't improve quickly.

Yes we have got injuries, but a lot of has been made of our squad depth, and as such we should be in a position to cover those injuries, so its not really an excuse this season.

too many players are under performing, and for a team with four (supposed) quality strikers we should be scoring a lot more goals than we are. Worrall's end product hasn't been good enough, from what I've seen so far Whitehead hasn't got the quality required. Burgess has got that quality but he isn't showing it for whatever reason. we don't look incisive enough and for all our hustle and bustle we aren't creating the chances we should be.

The squad has been heavily invested in, and it was widely anticipated we would be a top 6 side this season. Currently we look a lower mid table team, and it needs sorting quickly.

I don't think that's the case if I'm honest. The Harrogate/Morecambe/Carlisle review pods are a clear indicator that we will be constructively critical where necessary, and sometimes overly harsh. Nowt to do with Carol, we have no affiliation with the club beyond being supporters. I tend to be more patient around things, the other two not so much as it turns out. Perhaps they toned it down as I wasn't there last night.

I don't think injuries are an excuse. Yep, got some players missing but the players are fit enough to win matches. Cambridge are doing well this season, I wasn't surprised we lost (I predicted 2-0 so I at least got the margin right).

I saw earlier that all the sides we've played so far are in the top half, of which 5 are in the top 7. I wouldn't have predicted that those teams would have done so well at the start of the season, so maybe we've played teams when they're on the up as opposed to where they'll eventually finish. We're not playing great at the moment, not enough chances created and by that I mean, the ball that goes to the player who creates the chance isn't good enough. I think that comes with confidence, and we don't have a lot of it right now.

I think we need a couple of games against teams not doing so well, build confidence back up and get back on track. I think we need to inject some pace in to the forward line and play fast. I do think the Carlisle game knocked us a lot. The switch to 4-4-2 was a mess, we should have stuck to our system. I'm confident we're a top 7 team as I was at the start of the season. Teams go through rough patches and come out better. The fact ours is early is a surprise, but the season is long and we can get back into it.

  4. The Salford Preview is up!

We first talk about 'Project Big Picture' and how it would have affected Vale. Then Dan Trickett-Smith's departure on loan and the new revenue stream at Vale Park. After that, it's a Salford preview. They are managerless but have plenty of quality. How do you think the game will go?

  5. I think the first half was ok, not great. We played to a level where should be able to push on at half time. But the penalty miss and I think the formation played a part. When you go a goal down, you can faith that the 4-3-3 has worked before when they've been losing, so they could get back into it. Did they have the same faith in the 4-4-2 system? Who knows, but I definitely think the formation was a big factor in why we lost. My 'go-to' would be that the players are to blame if they don't play well, but I think they were put in a tough situation on Saturday.

I think the crowd is a factor at VP. I never felt like it is, but the fans can really get behind the players and I think they have an influence on refereeing decisions. Too many managers in recent years have cited it as a factor for it not to be.

Just managed to catch up with the Carlisle review. Thought you were pretty much spot on with your assessments. I was more inclined to agree with Stu's assessment of the first half than Johnny and Bezza's to be honest, but it should have been obvious that the midfield was testing overrun, and things should have changed at half time. Having said that, as poor as we were, we should have been 2-0 up before they scored, and had we have taken those chances we would have won the game inspire of the poor managerial decisions.
Thought you were generous to both Legge and Pope. Two senior pros who.were abysmal.on Saturday.

I didn't think Legge had a good game. 2nd time this season I've said that (Exeter). I think hopefully they'll switch back to what they know in 4-3-3 Saturday and we push on from there.

Unsure how Salford changing manager will affect the game. Although I don't believe Alexander was doing a good job, so it could possibly only be an improvement.

Another good couple of pods - cheers! Only Brown, Clark, Monty and Worrall and Crookes to an extent had OK games.

We played like when you turn on a match halfway through, think one team are struggling a bit and then realise that team has a man sent off and are playing with 10.

Yes I think that is fair on reflection. I too thought Monty had a decent game. But it was hard for anyone to come out with much credit from the 2nd half!

  8. And the review is out for Carlisle!

A strange formation change and lineup led to a strange game. Sitter from Rodney and a penalty miss, before Carlisle took control and won comfortably. We talk about how 4-4-2 affected the outcome, did anyone come out with any credit?

  9. Jonny's been on holiday so we've recorded late this week. We meet our new sponsor @InplayMan to see whether he's got any tips for the Vale game at the weekend. Then we talk the Wigan game, Mitch Clark and the absurd B teams suggestion from some idiot at Manchester City. After all that, it's a Carlisle preview!

Given that we’re playing pretty much Saturday Tuesday you could throw in an extra podcast on a Wednesday following the Tuesday game (time permitting of course). Just a quick half hour or less look at the game.

Also I know that the autopotdafwindscreen cup isn’t on your list of priorities but the poor performances of the last 2 weeks has potentially added something to be discussed afterward the wigan game to see how some players did. Whether you can fit that into the carlisle preview is another thing.

I think there will be an extra pod for the league games in the week. But Bezza gets 30 seconds to review Trophy games and we're sticking to that! It's a principled stand based on the fact that none of us like the fact B teams are in the competition. Until the EFL take them out, we won't take it seriously. Two of us boycotted the Stoke game we feel so strongly about it.

I think however, we'll have a chat about the game in a bit more detail as part of the Carlisle preview. Mainly because any individual performances of note from Tuesday should impact the side on Saturday as I think we need to make changes to freshen it up a bit.

Nothing like the raw emotion of commenting on a game straight after the final whistle. It adds some extra spice to the podcast. When the dust has settled on a game it would be interesting to hear if anyone’s views have softened or changed. I know you don’t normally pay too much attention to the autopaintwinsdcreeen trophy, but Tuesdays game is big for some players. If those that didn’t feature yesterday don’t look at Tuesday as a chance to shine and force their way in then theres something wrong with them.

I agree with you. I think we've softened a bit on Wozza. He played great 1st game, decent 2nd game and had 2 poor games since. But like most players, he needs good passes in to him at the right positions. There's no use giving him the ball 40 yards out on the right and asking him to do something. He's not that type of player. Make sure he's in a good position, get the ball in to him so he can make that yard of space he needs to whip a ball in. Burgess has, for me been anonymous in the 2 games he's played. I just haven't really noticed he's playing and you can't carry someone like that. I think he'll be dropped for Saturday.

Tuesday is a big night for quite a few players to take their chance. I think it's an opportunity for players to show that they are ready to step up. Monty, in my opinion is the key to getting us going again. He's a big threat from the full-back position and can put pressure on the opposition from the left-back spot. I think the other things to work out are whether Woodhead can start, do we need more pace on the wing, and who starts up top in the middle. Could be an interesting game from that standpoint, I can't watch however as I'm at work!

Started the first episode on my break at work on Friday morning. Only managed 15 minutes or so. Audio was a bit off initially thanks to Bez sounding like he was talking through a Pringles tube from the opposite side of the room. Will definitely resume listening when I get the chance to do so.

Like what I've heard so far and I'm sure things will improve as the episodes go on and there is more scope for topics to discuss.

Keep up the good work lads. People don't realise how difficult it is to do something such as a podcast or radio summarising. Difficult task not to sound incredibly monotone, not to be iff'ing and arr'ing constantly, adding appropriate humour and keeping a flow to the discussions.

Thanks! The audio does get better. Bezza thought he could do the 1st one on his iPad. We got him sorted for the ones after that.

@stupers I think your discussion in the last podcast about playing gibbo today and then resting him Tuesday goes out of the window as we don’t have anyone else who can play right back. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see him feature again which can’t be ideal. Big chance as well for some players to make a positive impression in the Wigan game after some of the individual performances today.

Suspect you're right. We really don't have anyone who can do role with Mills being injured.

The Wigan game is big Tuesday for some players, as discussed on the review episode I'm just about to release!

Just listening to the pod fellas. Couple of points to make. With regard to fans being allowed in the ground, agree 100% with everything you said about Boris' ridiculous rules... But...the Hashtag United video shows exactly why the ban remains in place. While the vast majority of responsible fans will adhere to social distancing, there will always be <ovf censored> who behave like that and ruin it for everyone else. It might be 30 or 40 of them watching a tinpot team, but in league football you could have groups of 4 or 5 hundred doing the same thing.

Ifollow is a farce, I had problems with the Scunny feed and the Crawley feed failed to work at all. As such I tuned into an illegal stream for the Exeter game. I wasn't comfortable with the club not benefitting but I'm not prepared to shell out for a sub standard service. As such if I tune in to an unofficial stream again, I will donate to the just giving page for the Lorne Street concourse. Either that, or if the club set up its own way of contributing, such as online golden goal or shirt of the back tickets, I'd purchase a few of those to the same value as the cost of the game on ifollow. That way 100% of the money goes to the club
    .

The Hashtag United stuff does ruin it for everyone else unfortunately. You'd hope that people would take it more seriously than that.

Totally agree with the point about donating to the club. I'm used to iFollow and have my season pass, so easy for me. Seems it's not so easy for everyone else.

Another good episode. In light of some of the ratings for the defenders and the comments about replacing Fitzpatrick if CLark became available, would you guys be advocating Askey change any of those positions? Say Monty and Gibbo and coming back in as fullbacks for example? Or swapping one of the centre halfs even? (Although IMO Smith and Legge are a great pairing at this level).

I (Stu) like Monty at LB above Fitzpatrick. I think whilst he's not as good a defensive player as Fitzpatrick, he adds more through his attacking play, his deep crossing and his overlaps. That in turns pins their winger back a bit more, so we receive a defensive benefit from that. I don't want to speak for the other two, but I think Bezza would agree and Jonny not! I'm sure Gibbo comes back in when he's fit. Maybe not straight away but I'm sure Askey would make a change quickly.

As for centre halves, I wouldn't change anything currently. It was a tough afternoon with Bowman up front who is clearly a handful. What we are short of at centre-back is pace, but can we say if we bring Crookes or Brisley in that would significantly improve? The two late chances Seymour had were a bit concerning given he was free both times, but we didn't concede. Incredible that I'm suggesting that it was an off-day for the defenders when we kept a clean sheet! Perhaps Jonny had his ratings wrong!

  16. Latest episode out now!

We quickly review the Fleetwood game, before covering the latest news at Vale Park and listen to Jonny and Bez have words about how lower league football is funded! After that it's a Exeter preview. Keep it the same, or make a change to the starting lineup? And our predictions!

  17. We've reviewed the Crawley game! Kudos to Bez for saying Crawley were poor, he was spot on! Was it a pen/red card for the Smith incident? Stu, Bezza and Jonny discuss the incidents and the game, before previewing the League Cup game v Fleetwood on Tuesday!

All available on Apple, Google and Spotify podcasts (Plus many more). Also here https://aleandthevale.podbean.com

What did everyone think of the game? And our chances for the Fleetwood game?
