Did Bill Bell put hands in his pocket. How does a football club make it's money. By being a football club that wins games.!!

Didn’t we get relegated with Bell?

The fans deserve a share in the club. We won't get it with Carol. At least BB promoted togetherness and made the fans part of the club... Yes it went pear shaped.

But then again, the last 16 months haven't endeared the fans. Little Port Vale please be grateful you are in existence she may as well say it!

The club went backwards massively under Bratt. What happened to the council money while under his watch. He never once put his hands in his pockets like Carol has. Bratt was not as bad as Smurf but that is such a low benchmark does not say anything for him at all.

I said it at the end of last season and I will say it again now.

    The whole defence needs replacing.

Jones should have never been given a new contract. I would have played more games than him & i'm nearly 50 and unfit.

Smith's not been very good for two seasons now and yet people think miraculously he's going to be good in league 2.

Why is a player being awful for 2 years suddenly going to become good?

I can not wait for next week when Uche Ikpeazu is released and then we can stop this pathetic love in with a player that is never match fit and only scored once all season.

He's a professional footballer and should be able to last 90+ minutes each week.

Get rid of all the out of the contract player's because that instantly makes room for new recruits that want to play for the badge.

People say that we should keep Garrity, Chislett & Ripley - I tell you now, we will not have a choice to keep them because with only 1 year left of their contracts, some League One sides will  take a gamble on them in the summer and get them at a snip. That's not a dig at Carol by the way but that's how the world works in football transfers. I can imagine someone like Steve Evans taking Garrity to Rotherham for £250k.

Let's stop signing players that have just been relegated with other teams because they have all got a losing mentality around them - Ripley, Mitch Clark, Chislett and Jenson Weir were all relegated last season.

I do not want the stink of relegation hanging around the place or changing rooms next season, I want to see a winning mentality.

We can not  pay up players contracts, this is true but I would be going to Ojo, go find yourself a new club.

I would go to Dan Jones and say here is 3 months wages, now, you can jog on.

The same with Conor Grant and Jason Lowe. Offer them a pay off but not all the contract.

Also, is it only me, but when James Plant first came onto the scene last season, he was a goal scoring, attacking midfielder?

Whose stupid idea was it to start playing him at wing back?

Let's play him in the position he burst onto the scene with, getting him scoring goals again and then sell him for a big fee.

The sooner the club appoint a new a Director of Football or Head of Recruitment or whatever the title might be, the sooner that chosen person can start dealing with the aftermath of the last two seasons.

Smith was player of the season last year, deservedly so and he has played well in the last 6 or so games. He is a good center back, just needs 2 decent defenders alongside him. He is not a wing back and he is no use at playing the ball out on the ground, that is why he needs better players next to him.

Someone who's departure has been overlooked somewhat, due to the lament for Ollie and Alfie, is Josh Thomas. He was getting better and knew where the net was. Not only fast, but also chased, which are two different things. Would have grabbed more goals than those who replaced him. Ah well.

If we’d have kept Thomas and he’d have played every minute that Loft had we most likely would have stayed up- he’d have scored 6 or 7 goals as opposed to Loft which would have been worth around 7 or 8 more points.

I’ve got a different take with negative tactics.

I thought Moore made us compact, better organised  and we started keeping clean sheets and managed a few results. Once we had to win and be more positive on the front foot we were very easily picked off and conceded goals for fun. I think this is the main reason our home record is atrocious. Combine that with a team which finds it very difficult to score I honestly don’t think DM had a choice. History has shown us when we concede 1st we lose so the only way to combat that is to sit in, keep a clean sheet and play for setpieces.

If we had pace we could counter attack but that’s just another story of our arrogant recruitment.

The difference with Crosby teams though we had a very good midfield with Blaster and Devine so we could keep the ball and try and attack. DM hasn’t had that luxury. The squad he inherited was significantly worse than Crosby’s plus Ojo has been sulking and stopped playing.

Generally we ended up with a very poor group of players, one of the worst in my lifetime.

Why do you think Moore made us more compact, better organised and kept clean sheets?

is first 5 games he conceded 3, 2, 2, 2 & 3. Not one clean sheet, it took him 7 games until we kept a clean sheet

in his first 10 games we conceded 16, 1 less than Crosbys last 10 games which saw him get the sack, he also gained 4 less points in those 10 games and that includes his only 2 victories while at the Vale.

Just to bring you up to speed on Wanderers, we should be pretty much at full strength after resting a few with knocks against Shrewsbury. For whatever reason that led to a dreadful performance but not just by the players who came in, the whole team just flopped and in the end we were lucky to get a point. Santos is the only doubt and if he’s still missing I suspect you’ll get a chance to see Will Forrester again who apart from Tuesday has been tremendous. I’m really surprised and disappointed that Vale are where they are I expected much better from you but obviously things haven’t turned out well and sadly since Saturday is a major must win game for us I’d be surprised if we don’t really go for it, including goals to have even a chance of overtaking Derby. Still you never know footballs a funny game but whatever happens I wish you well next season wherever you are. If it is L2 I think after a clear out and recruitment summer DM should have a much better chance of turning you around.

That’s a shame our only chance was if Santos was playing.

Nobody signs a 5 year contract on the cusp of relegation, then leaves or gets sacked if a few months later that very real prospect materialises. This is a long term project Carol and Darren have entered into. He needs at least two windows to start sorting through the mess and making the team his own, and whether people agree or not I think that's the least he'll get.

I don’t rate him, was very underwhelmed when we signed him and got criticised for questioning a 5.5 year contract. Saying that, I agree, he needs to be given a chance next season, not sure 2 transfer windows, he should be given all the support he can be given but if not in the top half come Christmas he should go- get someone else in and give them some money in January.

I've just been reflecting on how so many of my greatest memories as a Vale fan have involved cup replays.

The FA Cup giantkillings over Southampton, Derby County and Everton were all achieved via a replay. The 1988 cup run involved two replays while the 1998 penalty shootout loss to Arsenal was also the result of a replay.

Further back and before my time, the famous run to the semi-final in 1954 also involved a replay win in the early stages.

    :upthevale:

Don’t forget the Stoke replay. We would never have seen the stuck in mud effort from Stoke had it not been for replays.

  9. I think it also has to be mentioned bar West Brom how badly the clubs have performed after he has left, which doesn’t mean he has left them in a great position.

West Brom got promoter the following season finishing 2nd

Doncaster finished 14th the season he left and got relegated the season after

Sheffield Wednesday have struggled all season and may go down

Huddersfield have picked up since he has gone but may well go down.

Could be argued that it’s because they miss him or because he has damaged them but all of the clubs have had significant seasons straight away after his departure.

They’ve won 4, 3 of them in the first 5 games after he left (they’ve not won since Feb) - arguably they got the new manager bounce that we didn’t.

He got relegated with both West Brom and Wednesday (when both in the relegation zone when appointed) was sacked by WBA when in the play offs (with 10 games to go) the following season, was poached by Sheffield when Doncaster were in the playoffs of L1 then got Wednesday to the playoffs in the 2 successive seasons (promotion the second time) following their relegation.  Guess it’s debatable if  play-offs following a relegation is because of improving his squads but he had no transfer windows to avoid relegation and at least 2 transfer windows to achieve play off positions at 3 of his 4 clubs.

Are his last 8 months a ‘blip’, in what ‘til then has been a relatively successful 6 year managerial career, or are they a sign of things to come? No one knows but I’m happy to be patient enough and give him at least one transfer window to find out, whichever league we’re in.

    UTV

He went to West Brom in the Premiership struggling in the relegation zone who had quite a low budget for the division and failed to keep them up.

Next season they had one of the biggest budgets in the Championship and was sacked with them in 4th place after a bad run.

He then went to Doncaster Rovers who had a bigger than average budget for Division 1 and got them to 9th place in their first season and left for Wednesday in his second season when pushing for promotion/ play offs

Wednesday were in the relegation zone when he went there, similar position to the Vale when he came to us, he failed to keep them up.

Next season, he took them to the play offs and ended up getting promotion, but it has to be mentioned they had by far the biggest budget in division 1 that season.

I don’t know why he left Wednesday, some reports says he was sacked, some that he left.

Then he went to Huddersfield who have one of the lower budgets in the Championship and had a disastrous season been sacked with them well in the relegation zone.

I wouldn’t say he’s been hugely successful every where he has been with his only noticeable success was getting Wednesday promoted. But, I think it’s fair to say he has done a lot better with clubs with larger than average budgets and not so with clubs like ourselves with lower budgets. I also think by looking at his track record that he was the wrong appointment if we were looking to avoid relegation this season.

Lets hope with some money behind him next season, himself and our recruitment team can rebuild and he does a Sheffield Wednesday with us.

I dont think it was quite the Huddersfield fanbase tbf and as i have said before, they aren't doing much better since he left...given time he improves squads,he wasn't given time at Huddersfield and hasn't had time here yet

They have gone from winning 3 games in well over half a season to winning 6 since he has left in a much shorter time span. Not sure how you can say over time he improves squads, he’s never lasted anywhere for 2 seasons.

Doing poorly with a bad hand is a good way of putting it.

You either believe that his relative success at WBA, Doncaster, and Sheff Weds was all a big fluke, or he’s got something about him.

What success did he have at West Brom?

    Or Doncaster?

Not sure what our style of play is under Moore. We are certainly playing no different to the style (rubbish) under Crosby earlier in the season. Granted it is the same bunch of players with limited skill and no grit but I am not seeing any real football being played. I don't class our back four playing inept dot to dot passes to themselves as football. It's as though every manager we employ has the same instruction guide.

Sent from my XQ-CC54 using onevalefan mobile app

We are playing a lot more direct than under Crosby. Problem is Loft cannot hold the ball up and Uche is far too slow, not getting any joy from the long balls.

He's literally said this in one of his first interviews after becoming manager.

Don't forget his job interview was on Zoom as well.

Ok, as I said, just shows how incompetent he is, or just saw the pounds and had no other options. I really do hope we have a get out clause if we got relegated else it is going to have been a very expensive exercise.

  15. 3 minutes ago, NW9Valiant said:

Could he though? He sent a mate to watch us play before taking the job, and the only good thing he had to say about the team and the club were the fans 😄

I guess that was a tacit admission all along he knew the team were hot garbage then, but perhaps he saw potential in there somewhere (and some kind of promise of funds for next season)

If that’s true, which I doubt very much it is then it shows how incompetent Moore is by taking a 5 year job based on sending a mate to a match.

  16. Just hope Carol doesn’t lose interest. Can’t see any big money spenders wanting to buy the club, certainly not to invest their own money in to the club and get the club to thrive. Carol has some big decisions to make, bring in the right personal, invest a higher percentage in to the playing side and we can turn things around again. Our biggest problem has left the club, get a decent recruitment team in and things can become better very quickly, look how many players we brought in on our promotion year, it can be done.

And getting no one in during the jan window.

Can’t pin that on the manager though, Clarke had the same issue the season before. That lies with our recruitment team. If you can’t land any players, make sure you don’t release any then, letting Conlon go was stupid, although not a first teamer and most likely to be released, he would have played a major part for us in the last 4 months after Devine and Arblaster left, instead we relied on 2 more youth loan signings, one who played 1 game, never to be seen again, and the other who is no way near ready and has paid a major part in us losing points in the last 2 games.

Flitcroft has now gone but we have to be looking to make major changes to our recruitment team as they are continuously underdelivering.

The Uche injury was an absolute killer for Crosby. Fleetwood sealed his fate, but I do think he'd have ground out enough points to keep us up. Just my opinion.

Losing Garrity for the period at the end was a massive blow, him and Chislett have been our biggest goal threats all season

  19. I’d be happy if Moore went but on an equal foot I think he should be given a chance. He has inherited a crap squad void of any confidence. If we aren’t in the top half of the division next season by Christmas then Carol should get her hand in her pocket again, sack him and construct a proper recruitment process.
