Vale have added new faces in Shaun Brisley, Jordan Archer and Jack Taylor to their squad, which means that some players are unlikely to get first-team football with the club. Askey has already loaned out Alex Hurst and Joe Berks and has already said that Lucas Green-Birch and Danniel Trickett-Smith both need a loan spell. 6. Can Vale do better than their last away outing as they travel to South Wales to take on the Exiles. Team news Vale have confirmed that Manny Oyeleke (right) will miss out on this game but despite the midfielder’s loss, they have some interesting selection choices ahead. Askey took the chance to shuffle the pack for the Football League Trophy win over Shrewsbury (watch the highlights here) and one player to shine was Jordan Archer. 7. Our ratings out of ten for the thirteen Port Vale new boys… David Amoo 8.5/10 Amoo (right) has been ever-present and has chipped in with three goals. Unquestionably the most successful signing so far this season. Let’s hope the fitness issues which disrupted his spell at Cambridge don’t reoccur at Burslem. Richie Bennett 8/10 A strong start as Bennett has scored goals and achieved the near-impossible task of ousting Tom Pope as the focal point of the attack. 8. Manager John Askey has praised Callum Evans’ full debut after confirming that Manny Oyeleke is still ruled out through injury. Oyeleke is a key player for the Valiants if fit but his spell at Vale Park has been hit by a succession of injuries. Askey told the media: “Manny isn’t far away it is just he is feeling his hamstring still, so hopefully in another week he will be fine.” In Oyeleke’s absence, versatile signing Callum Evans was played in midfield. The 23 year-old was a summer signing but has yet to appear for the first-team in a competitive game due to injuries. He commented: “He is another one who can go past players. Continue reading International winger is close to Port Vale return at onevalefan.co.uk. More
  10. New Port Vale striker Jordan Archer says it was a “no brainer” to join the club but he is aware of the tough challenge for a starting place. Former Bury forward Archer did his chances no harm with a goal after coming on as a sub in Tuesday’s win over Shrewsbury. However, with Richie Bennett first-choice plus David Amoo, Mark Cullen and Tom Pope all off the mark, competition for places is hotting up. Continue reading You can see the quality – Port Vale striker on competition upfront at onevalefan.co.uk. More
  11. Former Port Vale owner Norman Smurthwaite has said he plans to sell Nuneaton Borough’s stadium, Liberty Way, in the next two months. Smurthwaite purchased the stadium last year when Nuneaton were suffering financial difficulties but under Football Association rules he was only allowed to be the stadium owner as his ownership of Port Vale precluded him from taking charge at another club. The former Vale owner says he had three bids for the ground – from the football club, the nearby rugby club and an unnamed third party, which he admits he is “unsure” about and which could be developers. 12. Another of our occasional updates on how some former Port Vale players are faring… Ben Whitfield makes a flying start The former Valiant had a flying start to his career at new club Torquay United. Having left Vale Park on Tuesday afternoon, Whitfield was named on the bench for Torquay’s game against Woking that evening. He came on and duly netted the equalising goal with a rare header. Torquay assistant boss Aaron Downes said: “I’m not sure he scores too many like that, but it was great for him to come off the bench and score such an important one..” Anton Forrester drops down to non-league After an injury plagued spell with the Valiants, the former Blackburn Rovers forward (right) has dropped down to the Northern Premier League to appear for Radcliffe Borough. 13. A look back at a still memorable FA Cup game for Port Vale. Despite spending most of their existence in the lower reaches of the Football League, Port Vale can boast about having a memorable FA Cup history. Former semi-finalists in England’s most famous knock-out competition, Vale have also reached the last 16 on six occasions since 1954 – which is pretty good for a club of their stature. Continue reading When Vale shocked Spurs to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup at onevalefan.co.uk. More
  14. Rob Fielding argues that Vale need to ensure that long-term planning continues with players’ contracts. Rob Fielding writes… One thing noticeable under new owners Carol and Kevin Shanahan is the ability to think long-term. Rather than the “end of the season” deal handed to manager John Askey by former owner Norman Smurthwaite, the Shanahans showed faith and gave Askey the security of a three-year deal. In one fell swoop it gave the club long-term continuity, it undoubtedly showed Askey that the owners had confidence in him and it reassured Askey’s signings that the manager was there (in a football sense) long-term. 15. Port Vale manager John Askey has hailed new signing Jordan Archer. Archer scored after coming on as a sub in Vale’s 2-1 Football League Trophy win over Shrewsbury Town and impressed during his first 30 minutes of Vale action. Askey told the media: “Jordan has pace as we saw. He can put people under pressure. He has quite a knack of scoring, as he showed tonight. There are parts of his game that he needs to work on but he gives us another option.” Askey was pleased with the performance of a much changed Vale side adding: “The pleasing thing is we have made so many changes and the players who have come in have played well. 20. Port Vale have announced the departure of forward Ben Whitfield by mutual consent. The forward’s exit was on the cards after he was transfer-listed in the summer. The deal did not materialise and Whitfield remained on loan. However, Whitfield did eventually join Vale on a permanent basis in August 2018. 21. It’s a move away from the League season as Port Vale play their first game in the Football League Trophy on Tuesday evening. The Valiants will be taking on League One side Shrewsbury Town, where manager John Askey was last employed before opting for a move to Burslem. Football Trophy games can be notoriously tricky to predict as teams often take the chance to make multiple changes in personnel as fringe players are often given a run out. 22. We understand that getting to a home game at Vale Park is not as simple as some local radio commentators think. It’s easy for media commentators to make overly simplistic, immature statements that “loyal” fans should be in the stadium but it’s patronising to think all fans live locally and have the finances and free time to get to every game. You may live abroad or hundreds of miles away in another part of the UK. Continue reading Can’t get to the game? Port Vale’s Trophy game with Shrewsbury will be streamed live at onevalefan.co.uk. 25. Port Vale central defender Nathan Smith was pleased with the defence’s display in the 1-0 win over Cambridge United. The result came after Vale were humbled by Grimsby and Smith was impressed with the Vale’s defensive play. Smith told the official Port Vale website: “It’s been a tough week in training and we’ve looked at what went wrong last week and it’s something that’s got to be cut out and to bounce back today with a win was the priority, but to do it in the way we did with a clean sheet is a nice cherry on top.
