  1. The difference from last night was that we played a different style of football to what has bored us in so many games recently.

Having two strikers on the pitch helped in so many ways. We played it into the strikers feet more times last night than any other game this season. We were able to get up the pitch and play forward quicker.

As for Uche, he’s not perfect and is never going to be prolific. However, he was brilliant for our game plan last night. He occupies defenders, pins them back and defenders naturally drop off. He was also a great foil for Wilson.

Play Wilson and Uche for the next 5 games and see how it goes.

  2. My views :

We have now lost the buzz, feel good factor and momentum that we had during the promotion season and Wembley trip.

We had a great opportunity to build something and we all thought that we had a promising future. That may still be the case, but it doesn’t feel like it.

We had a manager in Clarke who I believe 90% of the fan base felt attached to. He got Port Vale, he was one of us. In my opinion, Clarke was in position for the next 5/6 years and the only way he was leaving would be to a bigger club.

Then the unthinkable happened which derailed us - it’s been spoke about enough so I don’t want to go into it too much. However, Carol felt it was right to relieve Clarke of his duties.

It was then pivotal to get us back on that feel good train this summer. We had stayed up in League One, which was our aim.

Instead of getting a proven manager, or a typical Port Vale manager (Adams and Clarke) we took a massive gamble in Crosby.

Crosby’s tenure started well, but it has now petered out to what we all knew could happen. The decent start and the cup run has papered over numerous cracks.

We now have a fan base who have become bored. The same happened under Page and also Bruno, who played a similar type of football without getting wins. Fans have become apathetic, the interest in Port Vale is dwindling. At the minute we are nose diving I’m afraid.

I’ve got nothing against Crosby. I doubt it will turn nasty as he has a lot of respect. It just hasn’t worked out and was probably never going to.

  3. 3 minutes ago, Diego Maradona said:

Does the 'in game subs' in this match give an insight into AC's job not being under threat?

Surely, if he was at risk of losing his job, he would have ignored the science and kept his best side on for longer and (speculation) won the game? But no! Just throws the game away.

Stinks of making subs for the sake of it and being obsessed with sports science.

Play your best players to win a game of football and also to see the game out.

Crosby is learning on the job. His game management, tactics and subs prove this. He shouldn’t be learning on the job at a League One club. Out of his depth currently.

  4. It’s just so typical.

2-0 up, cruising to the third round plus 67k to boot. On top of that it would have been two wins in a few days with a home game on Saturday and the League Cup quarter final next week.

We’ve just managed to sabotage any little momentum or hope of turning things around.

It’s clear to see that he’s not the man for the job. Our game management is none existent. Tonight sums it up.

  5. I don’t think the argument about us playing badly so fans won’t attend is valid for this game. It’s a quarter final of a major cup competition. This is literally a once in a lifetime game for a Port Vale fan.

We also happily sell out away games, regardless of form etc. We sold out Mansfield (in this competition) and Shrewsbury recently during a poor run of form.

  6. I don’t think our fan base is as big as some people think or make out. This should be sold out easily.

We often come up with umpteen reasons when our home attendance is below par. I just don’t think we have the fan base out there anymore. We don’t seem to be able to pull the big attendances, even for one off games.

Wembley was one example, I expected us to take over 20k easily. Especially considering we’d never been to the new Wembley before.

  7. I think the issue with the ticket pricing is that the casual or part time Vale fan might not pay that price. The 6k / 7k or so regulars will happily pay £25 though.

Some people just won’t be enticed by playing Middlesbrough at home, regardless if it’s a quarter final. If it’s a Liverpool or Chelsea then it’s a different story.

It’s also a week before Christmas - people are busy and might not have the money. Add to this that it’s rather easy right now to watch the game on some form of IPTV channel.

Don’t forget that we often lose at least a thousand on the gate for Tuesday night games anyway.

I’ll be there, it’s a chance for us to get into a major cup semi final, even if we are the under dogs. However, I do think we might have missed the opportunity to get a definite home sell out.
