Just noticed that Raggett and Rafferty have been released by Pompey. There's little doubt we need some physical presence to bolster our defence (at 6'5" Raggett would be the perfect partner for Smith in a back four) and/or at full/wingback (where Rafferty has been excellent for Pompey). We could do a lot worse than these two but my guess would be that they are both out of our price range, which is a great pity. Just shows that there will be lots of really good players out there looking for clubs.

    Cheque book out, please Carol.

Good shout, these players have the right level and quality of experience that a team like Vale looking for an immediate bounce back to Lge 1 need to sign. Rafferty was a good player at Rochdale.

I personally do not think that Matt Hancock is qualified either professionally or by experience to be a CEO. He was head of community at Burton less than 18 months ago. That does not prepare you to run a Company in its entirety. So Carol stepping aside is not good in my view and something tells me that will be the gradual pull back by the family. Too much hurt and too many mistakes.

I can only see more struggle ahead.

Matt Hancock isn't running PVFC in it's entirety, Carol still is but she will not be as visible as before, this may be a good or bad thang only time will tell. I took from the Q&A the family were still as committed to PVFC as ever.

Matt Hancock is the Chief Executive Officer at PVFC and I would assume he is responsible for the commercial side of PVFC (Although I have not seen a job description), whereas, Darren Moore will now be responsible for Football matters including recruitment. I do hope Darren is a success and gets the help and money he will need.

I would imagine these two guys  will report to Carol/work closely with her as will other people like a HR person, a legal and a finance person etc, the usual stuff that makes up a board room.

  3. Interesting that the club aren't looking for another DoF but Darren Moore is going to assume that position/responsibility (If I understood/interpreted what was said correctly). So presumably all the recruitment staff will have some reporting relationship to DM or to his assistant.

That system should work for a club Vale's size as ultimately DM is responsible for the first team, tactics, performance and results, the buck stops with him. It's even more responsibility for DM so I hope he's good at delegating and is given the extra help needed.

  4. The most significant piece of information of the night was what Matt Hancock said about Carol and her family. That Carol was going to be less visible in the future and gave the reasons why but the family's commitment to Vale is to be as strong as ever or words to that effect.

The family shouldn't be beyond criticism and/or comment but I hope if/when it's levelled in the future  it's done with respect.

Just imagine what such a meeting would have been like if The Shanahan family had decided to walk away, there would have been no talk of signings, formations, tactics  etc.

Not many lower league strikers are to be fair. He was one of a kind in the air 🔥

Yep Vtid, it's a bit unfair comparing him with Top Pope in the air as there haven't been many better than TP in the air over the years although Vale have had a few that have come close in their time, Roy Chapman, Beamo, Sammy Morgan.

  6. The retained list as a whole was not good enough for Lge 1 and those players are likely going to be the majority of the squad playing for Vale  in Lge 2 next season, there's 3 or 4 players in the retained list who are good Lge 1 players.

For me Vale have to sign ca 6 Lge 1 high quality players to successfully compete in Lge 2 next season and get in the play-offs at least. Vale are not gonna challenge for the play-offs signing mainly Lge 2 players.

We need 2 goal scoring strikers, a controller/leader in midfield, some pace/trickery on the wings, a full back and a dominant center half. It's gonna cost.

I must admit, I hesitate to talk about individual players as I only see them play vs Vale but the likes of  Will Ferry, Liam Seracombe and the guy Lankeshire (?, Camb.) all played very well against Vale and have been released or are in talks with their clubs but it doesn't mean they'd do well at Vale.

Maybe Loft wont be at the club come August?

Perhaps WSU, we don't know what's going on behind the scenes but if I was Moore I'd be going with the  "Bird in the hand..." rather than what might happen. Perhaps Loft has told him he wants away, we can only guess but having two similar strikers on the books didn't work too well last season in terms of goals scored.

Uche's missed header vs Camb was an OMG moment for me. He can have the strength of a lion, his heart is in the right place, he tries and tries but when you can't put a chance like that away....what's left.

Both could score 10+ goals each in Lge 2 next season but I very much doubt it based on what we saw last season.

  8. Vale have Ryan Loft contracted to the club for another year, a striker who's not a natural goal scorer, not a good header of the ball but does put himself about so why do we also want a similar type of player in Uche. Uche's stamina and mobility also concern me, at least Loft can run.

Keep one and let the other go, don't keep both for heaven's sake. Worrying logic to have them both at the club when we've all just seen at first hand both in the same squad.

Remember big transfer fees can be paid in instalments.

Of course they can Fossse, see my original post. But Vale just negotiate a deal which best suits them, a/few million up front plus clauses/add-ons etc I doubt would deter a Prem Lge club, especially one a big Man U.

It's written in Newspapers but whether it's true is another matter, that Jim Ratcliffe the new "Boss" at Man U wants to sign the best young English talent so you never know.

  10. Really sad when a player's career gets so badly hampered by repeated injuries. If we could have kept him fit for the run in Vale would have stood more of a chance of staying up, sadly didn't happen. I'd rather watch 5 mins of Wilson on the pitch than hours of the other experienced strikers we signed during this season.

If he doesn't get fixed up with another club maybe there's a possibility of him staying with Vale on a pay as you play basis, the guy will score and create goals in Lge 2.

I’d always be more interested in the stuff they leave out of these videos to be blunt and I know what I’ve seen this season.  All the young lads are the same in that regard, and that’s not me being negative, it’s a simple fact of life, they’re not physically mature enough to be expected to hold their own for 90 minutes, or whatever, week in week out.

For the lads we manage to retain, it’ll be interesting to see how they fair next season, coming back a bit older and wiser after a break to re-charge in the summer.

GR, You can't deny there are some robust challenges that DiPepa rides and/or holds off, equally there are some challenges that "Flatten" him.

Just saying DiPepa's stock is high at the moment so if the right offer came in for him Vale could use the money to sign players to get us back to Lge 1 quickly.

There’s no way we’re getting 7 figures for Baylee.

Why not? He's young, strong and holds off and runs at defenders, oodles of skill, has pace and eye for goal, already scored 3 goals and 1 assist for Vale and goals as an u17 International.

Considering the lardies paid 24million quid for Imbula, 16m for Ndiaye, a 7 figure fee for such an exciting player with massive potential such as Baylee is a bargain. PVFC should up it to 8 figures.

  13. If Vale are gonna get promoted to Lge 2 next season money is required to sign at least 6 Lge 1 quality players who will play 35+ games and form the backbone of the team. These players would add to the likes of Funso, Garrity, Chislett, Ripley, Sang, Clark, Smith, Grant and Plant all who would perform well in Lge 2 IMHO.  possibly also Lacovitti and Jesse

One way to get the money is to cash in on Baylee DiPepa or some of the other youngsters. Man U plus others are rumored to be interested in Baylee, his stock is high now so a move to such a club for a 7 figure fee plus clauses and "add ons" would be in Baylee's and Vale's best interests.

Vale could then be in the market for such players as Clarke-Harris etc, I'm not saying he would sign for the Vale but money talks and it's that calibre of player in their respective positions that we need.

  14. It's management speak.  It's an adaptation of Maslow's Theory of Hierarchy of Needs, 5 human needs to progress up the pyramid.

Level/size of salary is on the 2nd or 3rd level from the bottom, in my experience it's often used by HR departments to try and convince employees that increasing salary isn't a motivation to perform better and/or move up the ladder.

However, HR departments conveniently forget that being paid poorly is a huge de-motivation factor.

There's probably lots of different adaptations for different scenarios floating about.

Not one I’m particularly advocating for (though I did like him) but Jake Taylor attracting interest from Notts and Walsall with his Morecambe contract now up.

Hope Jake Taylor gets fixed up, excellent creative player at Lge 1/2 level but sadly plagued by injuries.

In the Covid season he was on for 10+ goals pro-rata from midfield. His excellent performances in the run up to the play-offs and at Wembley played a big part in Vale getting to Lge 1.  IMHO, DC/AC sidelined Taylor during most of the regular season during their time at Vale and I was tee'd off at him being let go to Morecambe.

As much as I admired Taylor I can't see him coming back to Vale because of his injury record.

The truth is there was a mini league of poor teams with little between them. Those 3 and the 4 relegated teams. We had an awful record in games against those other 6 teams; which is why we've gone down. Some was bad luck Burton at home springs to mind), some was a lack of heart and sometimes we just weren't good enough.

Yep JRC I agree but we shouldn't have been in that mini league, perhaps if we'd have held onto Ellis Harrison we may not have  been.

Some wretched bad luck at crucial times as well, Deborah's header vs Fleetwood, The wicked deflection vs Exeter to get them back in the game at Vale park, the dubious pen decision in the 2nd min of added time at the end of the 1st half vs Cheltenham away but a good team doesn't allow these things to happen.

  17. For me the jury is out on Darren Moore, the defense he has is "They were not his players" and it's also fair to say "The squad is unbalanced in so many areas" so he has the benefit of the doubt for me at the moment.

Heaven hope he and whoever is responsible for recruitment get it right before the new season starts 'cause if Vale aren't in the top half of lge 2 by Xmas everything PVFC will not be pretty.

It's stating the obvious but lesson learned No 1 has to be to sign one or more natural goal scoring strikers. When goals are hard to come by and a team gets 3 pts for a win, not many games will be won and relatively not enough points will be accrued over a 46 game season.
