  1. Ah right was speaking with a Charlton fan at work earlier who told me he never looked like he was 100% fit so assumed he'd had injuries.  For whatever reason it hasn't worked for him there.  Not sure if he'd be a good fit for us or not, we certainly need a left sided player but probably more defensive minded in the wing back role? Grant has certainly given us more balance there the last couple of league games but he's more the "Beckham esque" winger who crosses the ball well/set pieces than one who is going to run at players and take them on.

  2. I remember Kirk was Crewe's best player the 2-2 game at their place when Anthony Kay scored that screamer only for him to equalise near the end.  Been a tad injury prone at Charlton but undoubtedly a good footballer on ability(as most that come through the system at Crewe are).  He'd fit right in with our treatment room at VP!😆🫣

Orient were the 3rd South leaders. We obviously were the 3rd North leaders, West Brom, the 1st Div leaders. QPR were in the 2nd Div.

QPR were 3rd Div South in 1954 same as Orient. Cardiff(4th rd) and Blackpool(5th rd) were the 2 top tier sides(at the time) we beat.  So in modern day terms we beat 2 League One teams and 2 Premier Teams to make the semi final(from round 3).

  4. True, I think it was mentioned in a previous thread, its certainly a good one to debate whether it is or isn't our biggest cup game. Aren't we the only side to beat the holders in the FA Cup twice(as a none top flight side at least?).  Everton in 1996 being the other occasion.

It's interesting if you take the games we had to get to the semi final in 1954 and mentioned the teams to people today they don't sound particularly big giantkillings but I think at least 2 of Blackpool, Cardiff and Orient were in the top division in 1954. How times change😁

I also noticed that Harratt and Hudlin are no longer getting on the bench under Moore at Huddersfield, i still think that Harratt could do something at League One level given a run of games(not sure he would get that under AC though),also one who if on a permanent deal could make some money for the club

I remember people moaning their bags off on here and vale social media over the possibility of Hudlin(I genuinely don't know if we were interested or not, Flitcroft's interview indicated we'd been after some players who are playing in the championship so who knows?) but I wonder if people would have taken him having seen Loft now!!🤔

  6. I suspect McDermott hasn't progressed as hoped? He was ahead of several others(some who are younger I'd imagine?) in the pecking order beginning of last season yet now they are getting a chance even in the EFL Trophy matches ahead of him. Plant being the obvious one(before injury he'd been involved in most games since the end of last season). McDermott for example only got 15-20 mins at Wrexham when others like Walters, Buah, Lomax got most of the game and Dipepa has now had a league appearance as well.

I suspect he might be released come May?

Is that because we've loaned him out or we're loaning him out more with the hope that it may get him a club after he's left Vale even if it's NL or NLN/S level?  Bit like a duty of care to give him the best chance of a footie career even if it's not with us. I guess that's part of the goal of academies as not everyone will make it but at least if they stay in football somewhere it's some achievement.

  7. McCallum has been around for sometime has mostly done well at national league level.  I think he's had a spell with Orient in League Two earlier in his career and didn't do a great deal? Other than that his record is very good in the NL surprised no one else has taken a gamble on him although would appear he's a Londoner based on all the teams he's played for and has sparingly ventured north of Watford Gap!

  8. Has anyone else been locked out of their account on the ticket website?  Saying my e-mail isn't recognised, I literally haven't changed anything on it since buying Shrewsbury and Boro tickets!😒 Unbelieveable that system is!🤯

Edit: Fair play to the staff on the ticket website, e-mailed in and they managed to sort it out.  Even replying to e-mails at 10pm👍.  That website certainly has some quirks on it though.  Be careful anyone if you are ever buying more than 1 ticket on your account and it isn't a linked person don't put their e-mail in on the details(I wrongly thought that was just for the confirmation e-mail for that ticket), it changed the login e-mail on my account.

  9. Interesting post DI.

Re Cass and upfront, I think the question there is do we have enough cover in defence, wouldn't want to shove him up there for too long and see him get clattered by a big bruiser and another one end up on the treatment table.

I think we only have him, Smith, Debrah and Sang(who's a bit of utility player) available at the mo?

5 of our 8 currently injured are defenders(personally I'd class Grant as more midfield but 6 if we say he can play left back as well)

I was saying to a friend the other week one of Vale's problems is the goals don't come from sources that are overly prolific areas(for any football team generally).  Thankfully Garrity has had a good season to date or we'd be right in the fertiliser!!

Obviously we all know we don't have a prolific no. 9/10(out and out CF), and we don't really score many off set pieces(Iacovitti at Oxford and Debrah I think got one in the tin pot trophy).  Garrity(6), Devine(2) and Ojo(2)(10 all told I think?) have got the bulk of our goals.

When you think about it that's probably why we are fairly easy to stop from the oppositions point of view once they've worked us out.  Creatively we aren't a bad side at times but when you add in the fact league one level players will miss chances this is why we have had problems.

Hopefully Uche will help as you say but it is a big concern!!

I agree, it's difficult to quantify - especially as you say regarding league position/status etc.

However my own personal suggestion would be the 1954 FA Cup Semi-Final, although I wasn't born then (even though my grandkids wouldn't believe it), personally I'd go for that.

I think pound for pound(for want of a better phrase!) that game would probably win in my eyes as well.  Well before my time as well😁.  In my lifetime I'd probably say the 2 games to achieve promotion to the 2nd tier(Bristol Rovers PO final at home with Robbie Earle winner) and away to Brighton a few years later), you could also say the West Brom playoff final(although we lost) as all 3 games carried the same prize basically.

I guess it depends if some see potentially making a League Cup semi final as bigger than making what is now the Championship(2nd tier) for Vale as a club.  I guess as one as happened 3 or 4 times in our history and last 8 of the League cup is a first it has to be up there?

At the other end of the scale the other game I always think was a big moment(not necessarily biggest game) was when we beat Chesterfield at home a few years ago with 10 men(Whitfield got the winner), genuinely think we'd have been in trouble relegation wise to the national league without that. Admittedly we'd have had other chances to save ourselves after that match but felt like a big turning point.

Sorry we're going off topic here but nice to reminisce!😁

Might be the biggest game for some time, but certainly not the biggest game in our history.

Agree, it's probably our biggest game in that competition ever based on how far we've got and what a win would achieve if we somehow did so but in our history is debatable certainly.

I always think 'biggest game in our history' is a difficult statement to quantify.  Some might say playoff finals are or when we won a game in the league to go up or at the other end games that have saved us from or turned the tide in a relegation battle/bad run as what might have happened had we not won.

When the owner has a wage limit on strikers that he has to work within what is he supposed to do? It should be noted that the wage limit is a lot lower than most other teams in this league.

I don't disagree, I'm not a Flitcroft hater/basher, I think by enlarge he's done a decent job, I was more making the point that however we dress it up the forward recruitment has fallen short in league one so far(whether that's for a reason(budget, bad luck with injuries) ultimately won't matter if we get relegated as we'll lose more money in the long run) but it saw us collapse last season and we are now in a similar position to when Clarke was sacked 6-9 months ago, nervously looking over our shoulder at the wrong end of the table so something isn't going well in that department.

Would we say most teams in league one have bigger budgets than us? I'd say Vale are about avg all things considered.  I've always said if we can't compete with the likes of Shrewsbury, Cambridge, Exeter et al(I could probably name half the league) in terms of potential new signings we may as well throw the towel in at this level.  Obviously there are many different variables as some teams will overspend(Fleetwood maybe an example of that based on their fanbase) but then you get others like Reading who have a good fanbase but are in the fertiliser currently due to mismanagement off the pitch it would seem.

Would this discussion be taking place if it were not for a bad defensive error in the 93rd minute on Saturday.

    Crosby in.

But it happened and we are having the discussion.  It's not a one off in terms of not winning is it? If it was I'd get the point but it isn't. That's 3 points from 27 as others have mentioned and we are one of the worst performing sides in both boxes in the division according to the stats.

My lack of confidence is largely with Flitcroft. Anyone who thought that signing no strikers over the summer was acceptable is clearly a prat. That’s on him.

Agree, his recruitment elsewhere has been decent but forwards since we have been in league one(last 3 transfer windows) has been lacking.  Harrison did a job last season and it could be argued injuries didn't help but it's arguably the most important area of the team(goals win games) that seems to be the achilles heal in Flitcroft's department.

  15. Balmer has been ok but not overly impressed. Debrah has had some good performances in fits and starts and seems like he can play all across the back 4 so would get the nod for me.  Unless of course there are conditions of Balmers loan he has to start(if fit)? I don't know.

Exactly, like I've said before I'm not even that fussed about ST holders being able to get additional tickets. Think +1 is fairer, but choose your battles, accept it and move on. Being completely ignored / forgotten is unacceptable.

I think someone posted above ST holders +1 then 1876 members 1 each would have been fairer(even if they got a day or 2 to buy first) I'd accept that.  Letting ST holders have complete free reign particularly with our reduced capacity opens itself up to all sorts of abuse imo

New director of football wanted him gone didn’t he?

Part of it. They overspent on budget the last 2 seasons which was why Caldwell(CEO) left a few weeks ago and a new DoF came in.

He splits Shrews fans I speak too, although he's done a decent job position in the table wise the style of football isn't the best(ala Pulis) which I'd imagine winds people up when it doesn't work.  But as a neutral you'd say they did pretty well considering the size of the clubs in the top six in league one last season.  The chairmans suggested they want a younger manager although of course that could be the official BS line

  18. Signing 22 players is/was ridiculous. I get the championship to prem is a big jump so obviously you need (some)better players(and Forest lost 2 or 3 of those that got them up due to them being loanees) but two teams worth is surely excessive?  I don't know if Forest have a recruitment system where someone else other than the manager signs all the player(i.e. he has little say in it) if so I feel for Cooper a bit, if not he's signed his own death warrant in that job.
