Arthur Longbottom, Port Vale’s top scorer in 1962 passes away
The official QPR website has announced the passing of striker Arthur Longbottom who was Port Vale’s joint top-scorer during the 1961-62 season.
Longbottom spent seven years with Queens Park Rangers before joining Norman Low’s Port Vale side in 1961. He scored on his debut and went on to score twenty goals in 49 times becoming the 1961-62 joint top-scorer alongside Bert Llewellyn.
He scored twice in 11 games the following season, but new Port Vale manager Freddie Steele sold him on to league rivals Millwall in January 1963 for a £2,000 fee.
He finished his playing career with spells for Colchester United, Oxford United and Scarborough.
In total he made sixty appearances for Vale, scoring 22 goals.
Arthur passed away aged 90 on the 17th September 2023.
