Pre-match quotes
I’m really looking forward to it. If I wasn’t, I’d tell you, if I was nervous, I’d tell you. I’m not – I’m really looking forward to it. I know it’s not going to be the finished article. I’m not expecting 28,000 or 30,000 people to turn up and go ‘oh this is Paul Warne’s team, let’s go and have a look at it.’ We’ve trained four or five days, it’s a slow burner but it’s a healthy club that we’re trying to take in the right direction…
Derby boss Paul Warne on his first home game in charge
Port Vale team news
The Vale starting eleven has been a constantly evolving thing since the start of the season and it’s unlikely this game will prove to be any different. However, Dennis Politic keeps pushing for a start and can’t have done his claim much harm with two goals in a 4-1 Staffordshire Senior Cup win over Newcastle Town in midweek.
Will Forrester also impressed on Saturday and could challenge Nathan Smith or even Dan Jones for a place in the back three. However, midfielder Funso Ojo is likely to be missing through injury.
Jamie Proctor remains on the sidelines as does Rory Holden.
Opposition team news
Derby are without striker David McGoldrick through injury although they have both Will Osula and Bart Cybulski challenging for a place upfront on Saturday. Louie Sibley is also a doubt after he picked up a knock on his ankle in midweek. The Rams won their last league game at home 2-1 over Wycombe Wanderers.
Meet (some of) the squad…
- Midfielder Connor Hourihane was an attention grabbing summer signing
- Defender James Chester will be well-known after a spell at Stoke City
- 37 year-old Curtis Davies is the club captain
- The well-travelled James Collins plays upfront
Man in charge
After a successful spell at Rotherham United, 49 year-old Paul Warne was recruited by Derby County in late September. This will be his first home game in charge of the team.
Familiar faces
Experienced Derby striker David McGoldrick had a loan spell with the Valiants earlier in his career. McGoldrick was loaned from Southampton during the 2007-2008 season when he scored two goals in eighteen appearances. Now 34 years of age, he joined Derby in the summer. However, he is injured and will miss this game.
Recent transfers from Derby to Vale in recent years have mainly been loan moves. They include midfielder Callum Guy and goalkeeper Kelle Roos. Other players to appear for both sides include striker Theo Robinson plus midfielders Robin van der Laan and Ian Taylor.
Through the years…
The two sides first met in 1921 when it finished in an honourable 1-1 draw. However, encounters over the years have generally been few and far between with just twenty competitive matches between the two sides. The Valiants haven’t scored an away goal against County since 1992.
Last time we met…
It finished 1-1 at Vale Park back in 1996 with striker Tony Naylor on target for the Valiants.
Overall record
