Former Valiants: Walsall sign released Port Vale defender Zak Mills
Walsall have announced the signing of former Port Vale full-back Zak Mills on a one year contract.
Mills was one of fifteen players to be released by the Valiants after a solitary season with the club.
Mills was signed on a one year contract by former manager John Askey as cover for James Gibbons, but he played more of the season than expected as Gibbons missed a lot of the campaign through injury. He was subject to some criticism when Vale suffered a run of poor form under Askey. Mills and fellow full-back David Fitzpatrick were criticised for poor positioning with Vale frequently conceding from the flanks.
Nevertheless, Mills came back into the team under Askey’s replacement Darrell Clarke for a spell. Clarke moved to three at the back in a move which immediately shored up the defence. While Mills wasn’t really suited to the wingback role his workrate and attitude impressed. However, his season then ended through prematurely through injury before he was released in the summer.
The defender made 25 appearances for the club and scored twice – in both the League Cup and Football League Trophy competitions.
