Manager Darrell Clarke made one change as he brought in Shaun Brisley for Zak Mills and reverted to a back three.
The Valiants started the game well and could have taken the lead from Cristian Montano early on. However, Vale didn’t have to wait long for the goal as on 18 minutes Devante Rodney cut in from the left and curled a brilliant finish past the keeper. It was the striker’s twelth goal of the season.
It could have been two on 23 minutes when Theo Robinson was set up in the box but his weak finish was saved.
There were further chances for Vale in the first-half and David Worrall could have done better with one effort. Colchester’s sole chance was a Chilvers shot comfortably saved by Scott Brown.
As is customary, the second-half was a different story as the home side came more into the game. However, Vale still had chances as on 63 minutes both Conlon and Rodney were thwarted by the home keeper and Rodney hit the post with the keeper beaten moments later.
Colchester’s best chance came on 77 minutes when Courtney Senior outfoxed Montano and Oteh under pressure from Smith, forced a fine save from Brown.
There was still time for Brisley to hit the bar for Vale and Colchester to apply late pressure but the Valiants held on for what could be a crucial three points. It’s been an encouraging few days for Darrell Clarke and the Valiants and this week’s performances both home and away could go a long way to guaranteeing safety.

What a change to be writing about a really decent all round performance. It certainly helped playing Brisley in the left back position and with Smithy and Leggy also playing in a more determined manner the defence looked a bit tighter and a preventable goal situation did not arise.
Great one by Devante Rodney. I know he has scored twelve goals but he showed today how capable he is of getting many good regular goals and if he continues in this vein he could end up with a tally of over twenty.
Some good performances and we need to say well done lads !
