Form guide:
Well, Vale were doing pretty well until that dreadful performance in the FA Cup. As far as the Football League Trophy goes, the Valiants are unbeaten and top of the group with a good chance of going through to the knockout stages. Opponents Liverpool B are bottom of the group table with no points and having conceded nine goals in two games.
Port Vale team news:
We’re expecting wholesale changes for this game. Dino Visser (pictured) is expected to play in goal while the likes of Zak Mills, Shaun Brisley, Harry McKirdy, Mark Cullen and Alex Hurst could all potentially start.
Our guesswork XI is exactly that…
Guesswork XI:
Visser – Mills, Brisley, Crookes, Montano – Joyce, Burgess, Oyeleke – Hurst, Cullen, McKirdy
Harry McKirdy has had a quiet start to his Vale career so far. This game should give him a start and a chance to show what he offers. With an impressive goal record at Carlisle United can McKirdy help solve the Vale goals issue?
Opposition team news:
Midfielder Elijah Dixon-Bonner is injured and is set to miss this game but midfielder Leighton Clarkson has returned from suspension.
One to watch: Captain Liam Miller is a Canadian International who has played for the first-team in the FA Cup.

Opposition manager:
Barry Lewtas took over as Liverpool’s B-team manager in May 2020,after Neil Critchley’s departure to Blackpool. He joined Liverpool in 2013 after working previously at Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers.
Pre-match quote
Although we can’t qualify we certainly want to try and make sure we win one of these games, so we’ll be going to Vale Park up against a good Port Vale team. I know they lost in the FA Cup at the weekend so no doubt they will be a little bit sore and want to bounce back after that result…
Liverpool B manager Barry Lewtas
Connections:
Should he feature, Vale’s David Amoo (pictured) could face the team where he started his career. Amoo made just one appearance for Liverpool before moving to Preston North End. Dan Trickett-Smith also had a spell with Liverpool but he will not feature as he is on loan at Leek Town.
It’s the next age group down, but well respected former Port Vale midfielder Marc Bridge-Wilkinson is now manager of the Liverpool U18 team. Bridge-Wilkinson was signed on a free from Derby County and made 140 appearances, scoring 36 goals. He later moved on to Stockport County, Bradford City, Carlisle United and Stockport County.
Other players we could find who featured for both sides are:
- Defender Sam Hart (pictured) who had a spell on loan with Vale in 2016
- Forward Ian Armstrong who made a hundred appearances for the Valiants
- Former Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland had a spell as Vale goalkeeping coach
Last time we met:
The two sides have never met before but Vale have played the Liverpool senior side on numerous occasions. One of the more memorable times was their trip to Anfield in the League Cup in 1991. You can watch the entire game again through this link
