After a terrible recent record in the League Cup, Vale finally reached the third round after a thrilling two legged win over Notts County. Vale won the home leg 2-1 after goals from Foyle and Brian Mills. They then lost the away game 2-3 with strikes from Foyle and Houchen only to progress on the away goals rule. What about the Vale team that season? John Rudge had been forced to sell star duo Robbie Earle and Darren Beckford in the summer for £1.7m. He’d brought in Martin Foyle from Oxford United for £375,000, Keith Houchen for £100,000, Peter Swan for £300,000 while Dutch midfielder Nico Jalink joined on a free to link up with compatriot Robin van der Laan in midfield.
