Transfer moves: what’s happened and what could still happen
It’s been a busy period for Port Vale. We take a look at what who has joined and left and examine some possible future transfer activity.
Goalkeepers
Any business?
Yes – Ryan Boot and Joe Slinn were released while Rob Lainton was transfer-listed. It left Sam Hornby as the only keeper under contract, a situation which was rectified early when Neil Aspin snapped up Wycombe’s promotion-winner Scott Brown.
What’s likely to happen?
It appears that Neil Aspin is happy with a duo of experienced Scott Brown and rookie Sam Hornby. Therefore, the only move could be an exit for Rob Lainton if the transfer-listed keeper has interest from elsewhere.
Defenders
Any business?
Plenty – A number of players were released while Joe Davis and Callum Howe were both transfer-listed. Howe has subsequently left to join Harrogate Town. In have come the experienced Leon Legge and non-league prospect Connell Rawlinson.
What’s likely to happen?
Aspin will clearly allow Davis to leave if there is interest. He could still be interested in back-up cover at left-back. The Vale have been linked with Cheltenham Town’s Jordan Cranston. Kjell Knops will also train with the club and there is a slight chance he could be kept on to provide cover on the left-hand side. Finally, Vale have made it clear that they would welcome back West Brom’s Kyle Howkins on loan if a deal could be agreed.
Central midfield
Any business?
Not much – Billy Reeves, Harry Middleton and Chris Regis were let go but Vale veterans Tonge, Pugh and Kay still remain. It means Vale have an experienced albeit ageing midfield spine. Aspin has moved to address that by bringing in Luke Joyce from Carlisle United.
What’s likely to happen?
The Vale boss has made it clear that he still wants another central midfield option. With Joyce fulfilling the defensive role, it’s likely that he would like a more attacking, box-to-box player. Vale may also want to loan out Mike Calveley to gain experience.
Wingers
Any business?
A little. Vale already had David Worrall and Luke Hannant – arguably two of the most impressive figures from last season and has added a wildcard in Brendon Daniels. With Cristian Montano and Dior Angus also able to fill in on the flanks it appears Vale are well stocked for wingers.
What’s likely to happen?
Not much. Youngster Harry Benns could be loaned out to gain experience.
Upfront
Any business?
Anton Forrester was released while Tyrone Barnett has been transfer-listed. It leaves just rookies Dan Turner and Dior Angus to support Tom Pope.
What’s likely to happen?
Aspin has made it clear he wants two forwards. Vale have been linked with a move for Chesterfield’s transfer-listed Luke Dennis who could cost up to £100,000.

Billy Knott is a free agent again could well be worth a punt as a box to box midfielder. He was excellent for us but seems to have lost his way somewhat since turning us down and joining Bradford permanently.
