Bernie Wright player profile
Bernie Wright was a powerful striker who was signed by Port Vale FC manager Dennis Butler from Bradford City for a £9,000 fee in June 1978. Wright had previously played for Everton and Walsall (two spells).
He rapidly became a Valiants crowd favourite after he scored a hat-trick against Crewe Alexandra. The striker finished as Port Vale’s top scorer in the 1978–79 season with 15 strikes in 48 games, and was voted the club’s Player of the Year.
However, he was selected less frequently in 1979-80 and was transfer-listed after an argument with Port Vale manager John McGrath. He was handed a free transfer in 1980.
He later moved into non-league football with spells for Kidderminster, Cheltenham Town, Trowbridge Town, Worcester City and Gloucester City.
