A versatile attacking player, Dodds has been a valuable squad player at the club since he joined in 2008. Dodds showed his goalscoring ability by scoring on his debut but his ability to play in several positions has meant that he has often been employed as a substitute.

He scored eight goals as the Vale won promotion from League Two in 2013 and signed a new contract in the summer of 2015 for 12 months with an option of an additional year. In the summer of 2016 he turned down a new contract offer from Vale and opted to join Shrewsbury Town.
