  1. It's very carefully managed. Look at the teams, Newcastle and Tottenham. It's testing the water, it's giving a fairly high ranking teams, enough to show that the premier league take this seriously, but not one of the big 4 who would no doubt complain bitterly. To hell with the lower leagues; give them a measly handout to keep them sweet.

There is no foreign market or TV money in the lower leagues so the teams get shafted by the Premier league. The gap between the Premier league and other leagues grows and grows. The championship has become a pit of debt as desperate chairpersons gamble on a shot at the big time. This, along with FFP, bites back at the Premier league. It's a stacked deck, the premier league is a league within a league. It's the big clubs and then half a table of rubbish. Bournemouth vs Brentford or Wolves anyone - yawn....

Do I mind or care? not really. Football in the lower leagues, apart from a glimmer of cash in the 90's, has always been cash strapped. There is the occasional Salford/Wrexham anomaly, but after a while the glitter and razzmatazz fade and the teams return to around their previous level (see Wigan, Bradford etc).

Might as well move lock stock and barrel; easier to 'grow the brand' that way

    The Minnesota Mancks'

    'San Francisco Scouse'

    'Houston Hotspur'

    'Chattanooga Chelsea'

And get rid of that ridiculous relegation nonsense

    Some decent time-out periods too

Then the rest of us can get on with enjoying proper football clubs

Careful, chattanooga Chelsea has quite a ring to it.

England great Anderson to retire this summer

The first Test against West Indies at Lord's on 10 July will be his last.

Just to say thank you for all of the wonderful memories.

Certainly England's greatest ever bowler and arguably the world's greatest ever seam bowler.

I hope Jimmy joins the England coaching team.

Agree with all of this.   It's been a pleasure to watch Jimmy over the years. Accuracy, subtle movement and swing. Such a skilful bowler. At times, when the conditions were right he was mesmeric. Later in his career his accuracy was such that he was still a potent force on flat dry pitches.

Also a fine fielder, although batting was a bit weak 🙂

I've been lucky to see three of the finest ever bowlers: Anderson, Warne and McGrath.

  4. I can't say I am at all happy we are relegated, but overall I feel relief that this is over. I'm glad we are down, it's deserved. I hope we a unemotional and clinical in having a proper clear out, to remove the battle-scarred, the weak, the feeble and the perennially injured.

I'm glad we have not taken it to the last game. Had we taken it to the last game, had we put up a better fight, it might have encouraged the club to keep hold some. I hope they don't

I do feel sorry for some of the backroom staff who no doubt have been trying their best to do well for the club, based on a steer from the recently departed. No doubt the new L2 regime and limited funds will mean many will be shown the door.

We have dropped through one trap door. Next season there is no safety net, a repeat of the mistakes of this season and the unthinkable could happen.

Who trusts DM to rebuild and become a successful manager of PVFC in L2 next season?

Not me. No previous evidence of building a squad on a shoe string budget - not that it means that he can't but unlike Clarke, for example, who managed to improve a poor Cheltenham squad, there is no evidence that he has improved this squad from what he inherited. Anyway, I doubt and hope he isn't here next season.

  6. What a relief, sadly quite a bit of damage has been done both in the stands and on the pitch. That is going to take time, energy and resources to resolve

I would love to hear DM say "I cannot wait to get rid of the dead wood" in about a months time - but I feel he is not a man given to public statements of this type. We shall see...

It was a joke, referencing the wondeful work he did at Stoke.

Doh! Sorry still wearing up from Christmas!     It did all go wrong for Stoke whilst he was there. Anyone remember some of his excellent signings like Kevin Wimmer?

Bryan Robson did ok I thought

Robson had accepted Middlesbrough's offer to become player-manager at the end of the 1993–94 season, and made a dream start to his managerial career as the club won the Division One title and promotion to the Premier League.

Fair enough he has had more success than most of the others on the list, although that success was backed by cash... Other than a promotion with Middlesbrough, where he also took the expensively assembled squad down, his other appointments have been suitably rank.

Alan Shearer was a bit of a disaster when he did it for a brief period at Newcastle.

Possibly harsh... Shipped in to rescue his hometown club...    But to be fair did nothing to turn the club around in 8 games in charge and was the man that took Newcastle down...     Never touched management since...

Looks like Rooney about to be sacked by Blues. All time great <ovf censored> up that was sacking Eustace for him.

Without being a complete shambles the Blues have been a money pit and a mess for years. Another sjoke like club who think a big name manager will solve all problems.

Here's an idea for a very short thread - Successful top level player who becomes successful manager - Pep Guardiola, Ancelotti, Zidane (maybe)

Add him to the pile of successful players who failed at management

Steve Bruce (whilst we has had some success, never rated him)

    Bryan Robson

    Wayne Rooney

    Steven Gerrard

    Frank Lampard

Watching for the first time from the posh seats as an 80th birthday present for my dad... Come on vale, pull a performance from somewhere, anywhere for me...

It's too much to dream of a hat-trick from our senior striker (are performing players allowed to stay on the pitch to complete hat tricks)

Turned out nice again! What a game to pick!!  Great game, hospitality was fantastic - would recommend it as a treat, and topping it all off got the meet john rudge. Superb.

playing wise lots of great performances. That challenge from loft right at the end to take the pressure off was an excellent sign. We desperately need our forwards to start scoring.  Arblaster and Devine owned the midfield.  Onwards and upwards.

    Gerrard sacked

Another high profile player who isn't really cutting the mustard as manager. I may be blinkered on this, but it does seem to happen time and time again that chairman think that good players make good managers. And time and time again that hypothesis fails. OK, you could argue he did a good job at Rangers, but actually Rangers were doing pretty well in the hardly competitive league before he added the cherry on the top.
