Talking points
Take the strain?
There’s now real fan anxiety about the Vale manager with an open debate on the forum about his future. We’ve also pointed out issues for him to address in our editorial. Should he fail to solve his Vale side’s issues, the club owners could face some tough decisions on his future.
Time for Ojo?
In another of our editorials, we felt that the veteran midfielder provided a compelling case to be picked after his performance in midweek. Whether Darren Moore agrees will be interesting to see.
Known injury list
Mitch Clark, Jordan Gabriel and Liam Gordon are all long-term injured.
Our Preferred Vale line-up (3-5-2)

Meet the manager
Former Cheltenham Town, Barnsley, Swansea City and Huddersfield Town manager Michael Duff was appointed Wycombe boss in September 2025. He has got off to a great start. The 47 year-old has been in charge for 12 games, winning eight of them.
Recent form
Excellent. Wycombe will be visiting on the back of three straight League One wins. What’s more they’ve scored ten times in those matches.
Last match
In midweek, Wanderers beat Gillingham 3-0 in the Football League Trophy. Their last League game was a 4-1 win over Leyton Orient.

Over the years
Brief History
Wycombe Wanderers were founded in 1887 and entered the Southern League in 1896. They won promotion into the Football League as Football Conference champions in 1992–93 under Martin O’Neill. The club secured promotion out of League Two in 2017–18 under the stewardship of Gareth Ainsworth, who then took the club to the Championship for the first time in the club’s history. They returned to League One in 2021.
Stadium
Wycombe used the proceeds of the sale of their former Loakes Park ground to fund the purchase of the Adams Park land. The stadium was completed in 1990 and was named after former captain and benefactor Frank Adams.

Fixture history
The two sides first met in 2000 when it finished in a 1-0 home defeat for the Valiants. Vale had to wait 12 years (and six matches) for their first win – that being a comprehensive 4-1 win in 2012.
Last time we met
The sides last met in April 2024 when it ended in a disappointing 2- home loss for the Valiants. Ethan Chislett was on target for the Vale.

Player connections
Former Port Vale loanee Jack Grimmer is a member of the Wanderers squad. Grimmer, who had a loan spell in Burslem in 2014 has been with Wanderers since 2019 and now has over 200 appearances for the side.
Vintage connection
We’ll leave aside the obvious choice of Gareth Ainsworth and go more left-field… diminutive midfielder Chris Herd had loan spells with both clubs in quick succession. He joined the Valiants in January 2008 and Wycombe in March of the same year. Then an Aston Villa player, his career in Birmingham never really took off and he began a journeyman career which saw spells in Australia, Thailand, India, Bangladesh and Malaysia. He retired in 2021 after around 150 senior appearances and three senior caps for Australia.

Any chance of 4 4 2 ? It would help us to control the midfield and stop Wycombe simply nullifying our one tactic of using wing backs.
A scrappy 1-0 will do me,PLEASE,as for the team selection,ASK MOOREY,
It would be interesting to run a competition to try and pick Dopey Moores starting 11 and your bonus ball could be the substitutions. Saying that I think people would have more chance of winning the Lottery! To attempt to guess Vales starting line up and the workings of DM mind is an impossible ask. The guy defy’s all logic and common sense and the only stunt he’s not used is to have the players play with their shirts on backwards so no one’s which way we are kicking. His appointment after his tendency at Huddersfield filled me with dread, but the reality of him being here is even worse than I could ever imagine. With the size of his squad, and the back room staff he’s been allowed to bring into the club he must be heading us towards record loses. He has brought to the club at least 6 forwards on expensive contracts, yet refuses to start 5 of them, we have three full time keepers, all of which are average to poor. We have 7 midfielders contesting for 3 places, but he continues to choose a midfield of under performers regardless of results. As I say the only justification I can see in picking Byers is to justify the length and expense of his contract. As for wingbacks I’ve honestly lost count on how many he’s signed, yet we still seem to be struggling to put two decent ones out on the park. We have four identical centre half’s, big and slow who end up being played as a back three, and quite often go wandering all over the pitch leaving gaps at the back. I’m not really sure what position Curtis comes under with DM using him in a number of positions. We then come to our young lads, all of whom have been tied to the club with lengthy deals who DM considers not good enough to consider. DM just destroys players either by not using them for months on end or playing players out of position all over the pitch. Croasdale, Ojo and Walters are the ones you feel for most of all, all three are worthy a place in the team. Although Croasdale missed three decent chances against Stockport at least he was running from midfield and getting on the end of things, and for me is the only one capable of doing that unless Garrity comes good. Croasdale’s misses for me come down to lack of game time, which is where I point the finger at DM for destroying players. If our owners had any idea about football the first thing they should be asking is, what return are we getting for the budget we’ve given you, then, why have we signed so many players not being used, followed by concerns of our younger players not making the progress they need to be making. But like the Flitcroft situation, Carol will bury her head in the sand not wanting to admit her calamitous decision in giving DM the job in the first place until it’s to late.
ROB, Can you please put “would know” between (shirts on backwards so no one——which way we are kicking) save me looking a cabbage ! I’m rushing around go to work!!! Cheers.
With Mr Moore in charge of picking the team the best result for tomorrow would be a postponed game due to waterlogged pitch and by the time the rescheduled game takes place we may have a proper manager in charge of picking the team. On a serious note 4 4 2 Mr Moore. Not winning tomorrow should spell the end for Mr Moore who is already on borrowed time, in my view
Duff has Wycombe organized and competitive. It will likely be a tough game, one in which the Vale at best might have to settle for a draw to stop the rot.
Afterwards, the owners should give Moore up to 5-6 games to get the club out of the relegation zone using his best settled line up. A contingency plan to replace him should be lined up with John Rudge’s insight and advice.
I don’t know if anyone noticed on Tuesday night after Vale had scored one of their goals, I think their second. As Ojo (who incidentally set up the goal) walked back towards the centre circle for the restart he started to hold his back. It makes you wonder was it a sly dig at the manager? Seen as Ojo continued to play for the rest of the game with no ill affects, was Ojo mimicking having a bad back in response to DM saying, “Ojo had a back injury and would not be considered for the Bolton game”. Personally I think there has always been a strained relationship between DM and Ojo ever since his arrival at the club. Ojo made no secret of his disappointment when Crosby was dismissed and could this be the reason for DM’s refusal to play him, and having him sent out on loan to Shrewsbury. If DM is putting the clubs first division survival at risk due to personal matters then he needs to go immediately. I believe DM if dismissed is entitled to just 12 months pay regardless of how long is left on his contract, and basically the 5 year deal was there to ensure Vale got compensation if DM chose to leave mid contract to another club. Clarke was also on a similar deal. Thanks for not showing me up Rob
