Manager Darren Moore says he thinks recent signing George Hall’s best position is upfront but injuries have forced him to fill in elsewhere.
Moore’s tendency to play players out of position has been a regular criticism from fans this season.
Speaking about Hall, Moore told the BBC: “Where I see him is higher up the pitch. His versatility has allowed him to play in wider, deeper positions for the team but I see him as most effective higher up.”
Given that Vale are yet to find a consistent partnership upfront, it seems odd that if that is seen as Hall’s best position, that he hasn’t been given a run of starts there.
Moore added: “He’s just been unfortunate that he’s had to deputise in deeper positions because of injuries.”
This seems an odd comment to make. Hall has been deployed in numerous positions including up front and in midfield where the Valiants have plenty of cover and competition. Arguably the only time Hall was played out of position due to injury was when he filled in as right wingback in the FA Cup first round.
The Vale manager is in no doubt about Hall’s quality adding: “He’s a terrific player and we’ve seen moments from him and I’m hoping the Vale fans can see a consistent run in the team with him higher up the pitch.”

DM comment about G.Hall are what most fans can see , blindingly obvious his comment regarding G.Byers about better playing more forward (give me strength) the afore mentioned Mr.Byers just can’t play to league one level anymore inspiteof what he may have done in the past rapidly losing patience with DM & coaching staff. Who constantly tries to fit square pegs into round holes? Answer Darren Moore
Who constantly rotates his squad giving his players no time to gel together in a competitive football match ?
Well I’ve been wanting to say that for a few weeks? Will George Hall be named in the squad for Saturdays match? Will he be in the starting lineup or will he start on the bench? At the present time with Darren Moore picking the team anything is possible.

I have never read such a load of tripe from a manager i understand now why he persists in playing 3 at the back he hasn’t got a clue. He was lucky to get the team out of division 2 after the results against Carlisle and Morecome.
George Hall was an excellent signing. He’s a very versatile utility player, effective at wing back, midfield, or up front with his quick movement. His selection at wing back in the FA Cup was probably correct in the circumstances, certainly better than putting Curtis in the role. I see some justification for Moore’s comments. Ultimately he has to decide if Hall is a “utility spare” to fill any gap each week, or, consistently select him in his one and only most effective position. That might be as a striker alongside Cole, but I’m not sure yet.
For me Byers would be better used on the car park directing people to their parking places. You can not play this ridiculous playing out from the back (which is the only way you can involve Byers) unless you have pace in the forward line to thread balls through into. Something Vale don’t have. So we are left with Byers going around in circles like a little crab giving teams all the time in the world to get back and reorganise, before our wingbacks lump a high ball into the box which we have very little chance of getting anything from. Byers is in the team for one reason and one reason only, to justify his ridiculously high wage (reportedly) Moore pays him. I’m sorry but a blind man can see Ojo is twice the player Byers is. As for his comment on George Hall, you honestly do need to give your head a wobbly. This is what everyone one is moaning about and have been for two years. To admit you’re taking a player out of his best position to plug a hole elsewhere basically means to me, he’s happy to weaken two positions on the pitch when there’s no need. Moore needs to go and the longer we wait the less chance we have of staying up. Just pick your best players (and not your favourites) in their best position, and stick with it. The more Darren Moore has to think about things the worse it gets! I have to smile about the wooden fence Moore has had installed around the training ground to stop clubs spying on his team selection, tactics and set pieces, give me strength!!! That money could have been spent on another player he’s never going to play.
This really is the last chance saloon for DM, he lacks knowledge of who plays best and in what position.
Come Saturday things need to be sorted or get someone else in to produce a team that WILL BE ABLE to fight for the SHIRT!!!
