The Port Vale manager reflected on the opening day loss to Rotherham and lamented the poor first-half showing from his side.
Moore was speaking to the Port Vale media team.
What he said
On the first half:
The first forty five minutes a little bit frustrated. That’s probably not what we want to see from a Port Vale team. We looked hesitant, we looked static and we were second to every ball. And then we get the sending-off which is our own fault because we give the referee a decision to make. Some may say it was harsh but I don’t think we need to put ourselves into that position.
On the second-half:
Then we get into the second-half. We changed the shape, we changed the personnel and that second-half was more what I want to see from a Port Vale team at this level. And it shows the boys in the second half showing that we can compete at this level.
On making three half-time changes:
We had to make the change. I had to spark something in the game. It wasn’t just the changes to the personal it was the change to the shape as well.
On the ten men’s late pressure:
Credit to the boys and the conditioning. I just think if the game had gone on another five minutes we would have forced the equaliser. They managed to see the game through and get the three points. We could have just showed a little bit more composure. We just needed to steady ourselves down a bit more.
On what they have learned from the game:
What we have to display is more the second-half and not the first-half. In the first-half that’s not us, we showed Rotherham too much respect. With the ten men and the way we were camped in their half – that’s much better. What we’ve learned from today is we can’t have a first-half showing like that.

We desperately need a new goalkeeper
Three up front in the first half was his mistake. As was the team selection.
Fair play that he made good changes at half time and if Tolaj had put his chance away then it would have been a good result.
That is the second league game in a row Tolaj has missed an equaliser.
What we have learned today is that Darren Moore is tactically inept. Last season in a dire League 2. 3 4 3 was a disaster till he was forced from January to play 5 3 2 as we were in real danger of not even making the playoffs. Nothing has been learned from that experience as today 3 4 3 first half totally overrun in midfield and our best forward on the wing. 2nd half with 10men 4 3 2 phenomenal performance. Our weakest link last season and today isn’t the squad it’s DARREN MOORE
Shocking first half performance from Vale, goalkeeper simply not fit for purpose. Much better second half even with 10 men Vale were the better team, we need to start every game with that tempo and desire. Thursday will be a test, big Darren needs to select his starting 11 very carefully. Early days but I think we are still light up front? Keep the faith, up the Vale.
Poor keeper and bad defending
Need a keeper fans not happy with him he’s not up to the job poor signing Daren sort it
The owners have placed a lot of trust in Darren Moore he has to deliver with good performances on the pitch and points for the club. With the exception of Rico Richards recruitment of players in my opinion has been poor long term injuries to Ben Garrity and Ben Amos have obviously not helped. I feel the side is now weaker than the team which started last season.
Early days yet but signs already he (Moore) is not even sure what lineup to use. Garrity and Amos could be long term injuries. No Walters, Paton Shorrock even on the bench. A long hard season in front of us keep the faith but have not much in the manager. It seems our medical team needs sorting out
