Rob Fielding

Rob Fielding is the editor of onevalefan and has been a Port Vale FC fan since 1980. He has written about Port Vale for 30 years. Rob has worked in many roles including in sports journalism and marketing. He has written a Port Vale book “No Ordinary Season” and curated the “Vale Vaults” Port Vale memorabilia exhibition. Rob has appeared on numerous radio broadcasts and podcasts (including BBC Radio Stoke) and written for multiple publications (including submissions for the Guardian, 442 and Word Soccer) about his club. His favourite player is striker Andy Jones and his favourite match is the FA Cup win over Spurs in 1988.

Rob has got the correct facts about Terry’s career, which is more than the club did. I have one memory of Terry etched in my mind for ever. He did not score many goals but he scored what I believe is the finest goal I have ever seen at Vale Park, now that’s some claim. It was towards the end of the 62/63 season a Monday evening game against Bristol Rovers which we won 2-0.

Many of us will remember Gazza’s goal for England against Scotland at Wembley in the 1996 European Championships. Well Terry’s goal was virtually identical to that one, except he scored it 33 years earlier. He broke from midfield on the left, exchanged passes with the left winger, who I think was Stan Edwards, the ball back from Edwards put Terry just at the edge of the penalty area as he was approached by a big burly Rovers defender. Terry flicked the ball in the air, over the head of the defender, he ran round him, keeping his eye on the ball, he watched it bounce once and as it came back up from the ground Terry hammered it home ri
