“There isn’t an immediate appetite to replace the director of football” – Port Vale CEO
An interview with Port Vale CEO Matt Hancock in Mike Baggaley’s Valiant newsletter suggests that the club could move away from the Director of Football model.
The club were subjected to sustained criticism after the majority of fans felt that David Flitcroft was failing in the club’s Director of Football role. Flitcroft left his role last month and is yet to be replaced.
Speaking to the Valiant newsletter CEO Matt Hancock commented: “There are conversations at the moment. There isn’t an immediate appetite to replace the director of football as we are going through this period of consultation….
“We have started to look at a recruitment group that would include the manager, the assistant manager, our recruitment team, and myself more from a governance and finance point of view, alongside Patrick (Shanahan)….”
This is an edited version of Hancock’s reply. To read his full answer and the rest of his interview you need to subscribe to Mike Baggaley’s excellent Valiants newsletter. The newsletter covers the Vale with at least 150 editions a year and access to all previous editions in our archive.
There’s currently an offer of £20 (50% off) for your first year’s subscription which will work out at around 13p an edition over the next 12 months.

A Director of Football would have worked and would work if the club had recruited somebody with a proven track record in the job instead of David Flitcroft a failed football manager that had a proven track record of poor recruitment with massive budgets at Barnsley Mansfield and Bury and NO experience as a Director of Football a person who talked the talk with corporate nonsense but failed to walk the walk with a robust plan of recruitment
