Port Vale v Newcastle Utd B preview – Valiants return to cup action but will they return to form?
Port Vale v Newcastle Utd B preview – the Valiants host a Premier League B side in the much reviled Football League Trophy competition. Here’s our preview…
MATCH PREVIEW
Port Vale v Newcastle Utd B: Tuesday October 10th, Vale Park stadium, Football League Trophy
PREAMBLE
It was a chastening weekend for the Valiants as they were eventually made to pay for missed chances and outclassed by table toppers Portsmouth.
However, we expect that game to have very little bearing on this one with the Vale expected to make a host of changes to their starting line-up. Who knows, there may even be a striker in it!
TEAM NEWS
Well, it’s really anyone’s guess. Here’s some things that may or may not happen…
- Jayson Leutwiler to be given some gametime in goal?
- Another run out for Dan Jones in the back three?
- Rhys Walters to start in central midfield?
- Jack Shorrock to play as the left wingback?
- Josh Thomas and perhaps even Uche Ikpeazu to be given a shot upfront?
OPPOSITION
Newcastle’s U21 squad is managed by Ben Dawson and were defeated 1-0 by Wrexham in their opening group game.
The last competitive game was against Fleetwood Town U21s in the Premier League Cup which ended 2-2.
TROPHY SO FAR
The Valiants continued their recent record of beating Crewe in cup competitions when they defeated the Alex in their opening Football League Trophy group game. The winning goal came from midfielder Ben Garrity in the 18th minute. Vale will face League Two newcomers Wrexham in their final group game.
