As this was a friendly game, it was played over four periods of thirty minutes each.
The Valiants included James Wilson in their starting eleven after he joined the squad for training and it was the striker who had Vale’s first chance in the opening stages after a cross from Shorrock.
Leutwiler did well to save a Grimsby effort before Funso Ojo and James Plant had further opportunities for the Valiants.
In the second-half, Vale had an early chance for Clarke while Massey blocked a Grimsby effort. The Valiants then took the lead when Ben Garrity headed in from a Lewis Cass cross to make it 1-0. As the game entered its final stages, Connor Ripley pulled off a fine save from a Grimsby header to preserve Vale’s lead.
However, the visitors equalised late on when they took a quick free-kick and scored past Ripley. There was some controversy about the equaliser as the referee was still talking with the Vale wall as the shot was taken but the goal was allowed. There was a further late effort from Grimsby but Garrity was on hand to block as it finished in a draw.
