The future of left wingback Mal Benning has been the subject of much debate after the club’s retained list was published at the end of last season.
The club’s retained list seemed to suggest that Benning was out of contract but had been offered a new deal after he was listed under a group of players labelled as “The following players are out of contract this summer but remain in conversation with the club with regards to renewed terms.”
When no news of a new contract came out of the club, there was speculation among fans about Benning would remain at the club.
However, after the defender featured in several pre-season friendlies, his future was explained in a Q&A session with fans, where manager Andy Crosby revealed that Benning had triggered a contract extension automatically.
Crosby told the audience: “Mal triggered a contract extension based on the number of appearances he made last season. He is under contract and remains with the squad as we move to next season.”
Benning, who famously scored the club’s third goal in their 3-0 play-off final win over Mansfield Town at Wembley, was signed in the summer of 2021 and has now made eighty appearances for the club, scoring six times.
