Who was Darren Beckford?
After a successful loan spell from Man City, striker Darren Beckford was purchased for a knockdown fee of £15,000 (with half the money provided by bucket collections from fans) in 1987. It turned out to be another John Rudge masterstroke. Beckford went on to be top-scorer for four consecutive seasons, winning promotion in 1989 and scoring 81 goals in total. In 1992 he was sold to Norwich City for £925,000 – a huge profit on the sum Vale had paid.
