Port Vale 0-3 Wycombe Wanderers reaction – “a very, very poor performance”
Post-match reaction to Saturday’s home defeat from managers Darrell Clarke and Gareth Ainsworth.
Darrell Clarke
Talk is cheap. It was a very poor performance from us. The reaction will all be about Tuesday night. As I said to my players, we looked naïve at times, the character was nowhere near enough.
It is not about words after the game, it is about reaction. They boys have an opportunity on Tuesday night to show me who is up for it. This is probably the first time in coming up to 24 months at the club that there has been a real momentum swing the other way, for different reasons. So, then you start looking for proper characters.
I stand at the front of that queue to make sure I pick the right team, the right shape, and make sure the characters on the pitch show they can perform and respond to a really poor performance.
Gareth Ainsworth
It is a bittersweet win for me because this is the place that gave me so much. But I am sure the Port Vale fans know what I was about and winning was important.
I thought the boys were fantastic. I thought they were really well organised, I don’t think Max (goalkeeper Max Stryjek) had a serious save to make in the whole of the game.
I thought we defended really well. The strikers will get the credit because they were fantastic, the chances and goals they have taken have been good. But the defenders…we got first head on everything.”
