29 years ago – Bernie Slaven’s goal helps Port Vale knock Southampton out of the FA Cup
On the 18th January 1994, John Rudge’s Port Vale side recorded one of their lesser-known FA Cup giantkillings when they knocked top-flight Southampton out of the FA Cup third round.
The Valiants had drawn the original game 1-1 at Southampton’s Dell ground thanks to a goal from midfielder Andy Porter.
In the replay at Vale Park, home fans were housed in the Hamil End stand and saw striker Bernie Slaven net the winner in front of a packed Hamil end while Tommy Widdrington (ironically a future Vale player) was later dismissed for a dreadful challenge and .
The match drew a crowd of 12,042.
