Port Vale goalkeeper John Connaughton passes away

The Port Vale Supporters Club have tweeted the sad news that former Port Vale goalkeeper John Connaughton has passed away at the age of 73.

Connaughton joined Vale in 1974 and was named the club’s player of the year in 1975. He made 218 appearances during a six year spell with the club before departing in 1980 to join Altrincham. Connaughton also played for Manchester United, where he started his career, Sheffield United, Halifax Town (loan) and Torquay United (loan).

He ended his playing career with 387 senior appearances.
