Ben Garner’s petty comments about Port Vale being “anti-football” are looking increasing pathetic after the FA announced that a Charlton player had been retrospectively banned for violent conduct during the game.
The Charlton manager earned scorn from Vale fans and even supporters of his own side when he complained after last weekend’s 1-0 defeat to Port Vale that the Valiants had “no ambition” to attack and played “anti-football.” His remarks came despite Vale’s stunning winning goal as well as several other good chances for the home side.
However, many would argue that using an elbow in an opposing player’s face is far more “anti-football” than a high-pressing and defensively resilient display.
Striker Jayden Stockley has been handed a ban for a 22nd minute incident during which he elbowed Port Vale defender Nathan Smith in the face. Stockley is now banned for three games.

“Charlton Athletic FC’s Jayden Stockley has been suspended for three games after breaching FA rule E1.1 during their EFL League One match against Port Vale FC on Saturday 19 November 2022,” said an FA statement.
“The forward’s behaviour during the 22nd minute of the game was not seen by the match officials but an incident was captured on video. In response to a charge, he admitted that his actions constituted violent conduct and accepted the standard penalty.”
