Pre-match quote
Dennis (Politic) will be in the squad, he hasn’t played much match time but he will certainly be in the squad. I brought him back to the club because we know he can change games. We know he is a scoring threat and we know he is more than capable when he is starting games but we just have to build his match minutes up…
Port Vale manager Darrell Clarke
Port Vale team news
There’s probably a few selection changes due by Darrell Clarke after he criticised the attitude of some members of his squad following the 2-2 home draw with Cheltenham Town.
Loanee Mipu Odubeko scored in that Cheltenham draw and is favourite to continue upfront. However, Vale’s forward options from the bench could be significantly strengthened.
Fan favourite Dennis Politic has arrived following his loan move from Cremonese and could well be among the subs. James Wilson also marked his return from injury with an appearance last Saturday and could join Politic on the bench.
Elsewhere, it’s mostly guesswork. Clarke suggested that Tom Conlon and Brad Walker were injured for the Cheltenham draw, so there’s no indication if one or both could be fit for this game. Clarke commented on his policy regarding injuries saying “I don’t really like saying a lot on injuries. I know that becomes a big frustration for a lot of people but I don’t do it to be facetious, I do it because I don’t want to give the other team’s manager a head up on who might or might not be available.”
Barnsley team news
There could be a familiar face in the Barnsley line-up after the side completed a season-long loan for Stoke City defender Tom Edwards. Edwards is joined in the squad by Man City striker Slobodan Tedic who is also on a season-long loan. Other summer arrivals include highly-rated former FGR wingback Nicky Cadden, former Ipswich striker James Norwood and former Bristol City defender Robbie Cundy.
Barnsley’s last game was an impressive 2-0 away win over Sheffield Wednesday. They are in tenth place in the table.
Man in charge
Former Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff took over in June. He has been in charge for ten games with a 40% win ratio.
Familiar faces
Barnsley will be very familiar to Port Vale Director of Football David Flitcroft who managed the club between 2012 and 2013. He had a 31% win ratio during his time at the club.
Face from the past
The late Lee Collins was sold from Port Vale to Barnsley in 2012 as the club tried to raise money after going into administration. He made over 150 appearances for the Valiants but just seven for the Tykes.
Through the years…
The two sides first met in 1898 when it finished in a 2-0 home win for the Valiants. Vale won on their last trip to Oakwell in 2015 when goals from AJ Leitch-Smith and Sam Foley gave Vale a 2-1 win.
Last time we met…
It finished in a 1-0 home loss for the Valiants in 2016.
