Former Port Vale record signing Billy Bingham passes away
Northern Ireland International Billy Bingham, who joined the Valiants for a then club record fee of £15,000 in 1963, has sadly passed away aged 90.
The Northern Ireland International signed for Port Vale for a then club-record fee of £15,000 in August 1963.
Bingham began his playing career with Glentoran and had spells with Sunderland, Luton Town and Everton prior to joining the Valiants.
He was a regular in the Port Vale side and his form was such that the Vale turned down an offer from top-flight club Nottingham Forest. However, in September 1964 he sadly broke a leg and was forced to retire from the game. His Valiants career record was 43 games and seven goals, while he played over 500 games in total during his seventeen year playing career. He also won 56 caps for the Northern Ireland International side.
He later had a long and distinguished managerial career including spells managing Southport, Everton and the Northern Ireland International side. Perhaps his crowning achievement as a manager was guiding the Northern Ireland team to the 1982 and 1986 World Cup finals. He was awarded an MBE in 1981.
Bingham is pictured in the centre of the above picture. Our condolences to Billy’s family and friends.
