Thierry Small player profile
Port Vale added highly rated Southampton youngster Thierry Small on a season-long loan in July 2022.
The 17-year-old joined the Saints on a three-year deal in August 2021 from Everton for an undisclosed fee. He began his youth career with West Brom before moving to Everton aged 11.
Speaking about the addition of Small, Director of Football Dave Flitcroft said: “Thierry is someone who plays with adventure, he’s a player who has a real no fear approach to attacking the last third of the pitch. When you play for a top club like Southampton, you must be well versed in attacking ability and desire, and that’s what Thierry brings to us.
“We look at environments to recruit from and Southampton’s environment for a long period now has produced some outstanding players, Champions League quality players, and when you go and get players from that environment, they’re always humble, respectful, and top people alongside being top class players. We believe we’ve recruited just that in Thierry.”
Small made his debut coming on as a half-time substitute in the 4-0 defeat to Exeter City but he struggled for game time after that, making just three starts by mid-November. That prompted Southampton to recall the player from the loan early. Speaking of that move, Port Vale manager Darrell Clarke said: “I have been in regular discussion with Southampton. I just feel, and they feel, that the game minutes he’s had have not been enough. I see their point of view. Thierry is a great lad, a model pro and a real good lad to manage. But for various reasons, he hasn’t played the minutes that we would have liked.”
