Interim boss Frank Sinclair reverted to a 4-4-2 with Mark Cullen partnering Kurtis Guthrie upfront. New signing Tom Scott was named on the bench.
Vale had the first chance with Shaun Brisley’s header from a Tom Conlon free-kick saved. Tom Conlon had a drive saved and the Valiants then had a strong penalty claim on nineteen minutes when there appeared to be a foul in the box. However, the Vale were then on the back foot with the dangerous Eisa crossing to Ryan Loft but the forward miscontrolled with just Brown to beat.
The home side did take the lead on 25 minutes. Loft looked to be yards offside when he received the ball but Vale should arguably have done better as he both outmuscled Nathan Smith and beat Scott Brown from an acute angle. It was a cool finish from the tall forward.
Yet more poor Vale defending allowed the home side to double their lead. Vale’s defence allowed the ball to meet Gilliead and when his shot could only be parried by Brown, Loft was quickest to the ball to double his and Scunthorpe’s tally.
The Valiants’ defence was once again looking a liability wheras the Scunthorpe defence had a comfortable opening 45 minutes.
Vale made three changes at the break which saw David Amoo go upfront alongside Guthrie. Good play from Worrall and Hurst set up Conlon but his shot was saved. Minutes later, Worrall’s cross found Amoo but his header was saved on the line.
It was a much better second-half performance by Vale, but with no reward for their possession as Scunthorpe defended a host of Port Vale crosses.
It was yet another hugely disappointing result for the Valiants although the second-half performance at least gives a little hope of better things. However, major surgery looks to be required throughout the team and particularly in the defence if the side are to stand any chance of addressing this slump.
