Lee Hughes jokes
The move of veteran striker Lee Hughes to Port Vale was a long and protracted affair. John Rudge had shown interest in a young Hughes back in 1997 but he opted for a move to boyhood side West Brom instead. Years later in November 2012, Vale had submitted a loan offer for the then Notts County player but Vale failed to submit the paperwork in time and the move failed to go through. Vale finally secured the move on the 8th January 2013. Hughes scored ten times in eighteen games as Vale won promotion, including a brilliant hat-trick against Burton Albion. The following season, his appearances were more limited but he still managed three goals in sixteen games. Hughes opted to leave Vale for Forest Green Rovers in January 2014 and he finished his playing career with a spell for Worcester City in 2018.
