The 1987-88 season was memorable for Vale’s cup exploits. After defeating Tranmere Rovers in a replay, they defeated Notts County 2-0 and then Kevin Finney’s goal eased the pressure on manager John Rudge as they beat Macclesfield 1-0. That win resulted in a tie against Spurs and goals from Ray Walker And Phil Sproson in front of 20,045 saw Vale win 2-1. It was despite TV pundit Jimmy Greaves claiming that “The only trouble Spurs will have at Port Vale, is finding the place.” Vale also received huge TV revenues as the gaem was broadcast on Match of the Day and in Scandinavia. Their next opponents were Watford where Mark Grew pulled off some fine saves and Darren Beckford’s shot shaved teh post as Vale drew 0-0 in front of 22,483. It earned Vale yet more TV revenue. Their magnificent run finally came to an end with a 2-0 defeat in the replay at Vicarage Road.
