Photo Essay: Vale Park’s new electronic scoreboard

This photo of the new Vale Park electronic scoreboard displays a welcome scoreline for all Port Vale fans.

Background

This photo is from the summer of 1988. Vale had invested in their stadium spending £40,000 on floodlight repairs while the princely sum of £20,000 was splashed out on the ground’s first electronic scoreboard. It was installed at the Hamil End of the ground.

The Valiants were unbeaten in their seven friendlies during the summer including this 1-0 win over neighbours Stoke City. Vale would end up promoted at the end of the season after a play-off win over Bristol Rovers.
