Vale 2-0 Cambridge reaction: Anderson praised after vital victory
Port Vale fans feel that although Cristian Montano was the matchwinner, defender Tom Anderson had a stand-out game against Cambridge…
Match summary
The Valiants ended their losing league streak with a clean sheet and three points at home to Cambridge. Cristian Montano was the matchwinner with two goals either side of the break while former Valiant Uche Ikpeazu had a miserable return as he was sent off in the closing moments.
Players and management
“I thought the players coped well with the pressure, they handled it, but the most important factor in the game was getting the second goal. Too many times we have been 1-0 up at half time, gone into the second half and conceded and the game has changed. So, today I couldn’t stress how important that second goal was. We got it and then that gave us a little bit of breathing space…”
Vale manager Neil Aspin

“Not a great game but today was all about the result and we got it. My man of the match was Anderson. Worral, Gibbo and Whitfield also had good games as did Montaño…”

“Montano looked dangerous several times in the first-half before he got his goals. Whitfield has energy and quality. Kay played very well today. Defence were solid. Aspo was bang on after the match when he said the second goal was crucial. Three tough away games now. The big squad may finally have some benefit over the next three weeks with six games between now and New Years Day…”

“Good solid win. I thought we played extremely well at times. The goals: well the first was magnificent and the second meant we didn’t have to throw caution to the wind . Man of the match was Tom Anderson followed closely by Nathan Smith…”
Van fan in Alsager
“Man of the match was Whitfield. The energy he brings to the side is superb. With Worrall, him and Monty supporting Pope we looked like a force to be reckoned with. I also agree that Anderson was immense today…”

“Kay was easily man of the match and the midfield, although against a weak side, looks much better without Pugh in it. I thought Anderson had a very good game as well and obviously Montano too…”
