The story behind our choice of image we’ve chosen to lead the article with…
6,000 up and counting. Our photo shows Theo Robinson netting Port Vale’s 6,000th league goal in last season’s 4-1 win over Rochdale. That game was sponsored by onevalefan.co.uk and by coincidence we are match ball sponsors for this season’s fixture.
Robinson ironically had a spell on trial with Rochdale during the summer but he is currently without a club having been released by Vale at the end of last season.

Pre-match thoughts
“I think if we performed like we did on Saturday and everyone’s at it, then I think we can beat anyone…”
Anton Forrester
“Port Vale are a bit of an unknown quantity because they’ve got so many players who aren’t accustomed to League One. That has changed, so with respect to us being able to profile, we’ve got two or three pre-season games to profile these players from. That’s profiling the way that they play and the way that the manager does things.
“I think it’ll be after around 15 games that we’ll get an idea of how things are done on a regular basis at Port Vale. They’ve started the season superbly well but it is only a start and we’ve got no fear going to Port Vale. We’re really looking to embrace the three very good performances that we’ve had so far this season…”
Team news
Rigino Cicilia and Paulo Tavares will both be doubts after the pair were forced off on Saturday. Goalscorer Anton Forrester (above) is favourite to start in place of Cicilia with Anthony Defreitas possibly deputising for Tavares. Ben Purkiss may also return at right-back.

Club connections
Calvin Andrew is expected to be in the Rochdale team on Tuesday. He was part of Vale’s 2013 promotion side but played on the wing he was rarely a goal threat scoring just once (and that was off his backside) during his spell with Vale. His time at Rochdale has been more productive and he scored the winner against Vale in April’s meeting at Spotland.
Vale stats: 24 games | 1 goal
Other players to appear for both clubs include:
- Defender Gareth Griffiths
- Midfielder Tony Lacey
- Midfielder Darrell Clarke (notable for a Vale career of one minute)
- Defender Dean Stokes
- Midfielder Peter Farrell (who could have been in the Vale coaching team today)
An incredible home record..
Ken Griffiths scored a hat-trick in the 1953 6-0 win.
Vale have an incredible home league record against Rochdale. Vale have NEVER lost in the league at home in 25 games and have recorded three 4-1 wins, a 4-0 win, a 5-0 win, a 5-1 win, a 5-2 win and even a 6-0 win in those twenty five games. Here’s Vale home record against Rochdale:
- Played: 25
- Won: 13
- Drew: 12
- Lost: 0
- Goals for: 63
- Goals against: 24
Did you know…
- The two sides first met in 1929 and it finished in an entertaining 3-3 draw.
- Phil Griffiths, Bert Fishwick and Albert Pynegar (above) were the Vale scorers that day
- Rochdale have won at Vale Park. They triumphed 1-0 in the JPT in 2013.
