Scunthorpe United 1-0 Port Vale match report
Scunthorpe United 1-0 Port Vale: Port Vale’s faint hopes of a play-off place were ended after a defeat to Scunthorpe United on Saturday.
Port Vale manager Rob Page initially named an unchanged side but were forced into a late change when Remie Streete pulled up in the warm-up and was replaced by Adam Yates.
It was a mostly uneventful first-half with few chances for Vale and the defence standing firm. The home side had the better chances as the Valiants were reduced to a couple of efforts from Michael O’Connor as it finished goalless at the break.
In the second-half, the home side finally broke the deadlock as the dangerous Paddy Madden headed home on the hour mark. Vale responded by bringing on top-scorer AJ Leitch-Smith for the quiet Theo Robinson. Page then added wingers Kelly and Moore but Port Vale were grateful for a fine save from Alnwick to stop the impressive Irons doubling their lead.
Vale had a couple of chances for Kelly and Leitch-Smith but largely looked to have run out of steam and ideas at the end of the game as their season fizzled to an end. Nevertheless, it has been an encouraging first full season in charge under manager Rob Page.
