Video: Port Vale’s Tony Naylor scores a hat-trick against Charlton Athletic
It’s the 14th December 1996, Port Vale striker Tony Naylor scores a hat-trick against Charlton Athletic in one of the most complete striker performances of modern times.
Pacy forward and Port Vale legend Tony Naylor scored a hugely impressive eight nine goals in Port Vale colours but this match may be one of the forward’s finest-ever displays in a Vale shirt. Naylor played upfront as a lone striker but legendary Vale manager John Rudge’s counter-attacking style appears to suit the striker perfectly.
The forward netted three times as the Valiants came from behind to record a fantastic 3-1 away victory against Charlton Athletic at the Valley. While the goals were pretty spectacular it’s also worth noting that the Port Vale side’s distinctive “cigar and chair” goal celebrations were pretty special too…
The prolific Naylor went on to score twenty goals by the end of that season as Port Vale finished the 1996-97 season in their joint-highest league placing in the club’s long history and their highest league position since the 1930’s.
