Simon Mills player profile:
Widely regarded as the club’s best right-back in the last fifty years, Simon Mills was yet another superb signing by long-serving manager John Rudge.
Mills was signed from York City in 1987 for £35,000 with the money for the transfer coming from the sale of Andy Jones.
Originally a central midfield, Mills couldn’t force his way into the Vale side, which already had the midfield partnership of Ray Walker and Robbie Earle so he was converted by Rudge into a classy ball-playing right-back.
The late 1980’s Port Vale corner routine of “MBE” (Mills to Beckford to Earle) proved to be a key factor in the club’s promotion in 1989 with Earle netting the decisive goal which secured promotion by this routine.
Mills was a capable performer at the new higher level but sadly injuries were to disrupt the latter part of his Port Vale career.
A huge fans favourite, he was released on a free transfer in 1994.
